As the theoretical foundations of multiple-antenna techniques evolve and as these multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques become essential for providing high data rates in wireless systems, there is a growing need to understand the performance limits of MIMO in practical networks. To address this need, MIMO Communication for Cellular Networks presents a systematic description of MIMO technology classes and a framework for MIMO system design that takes into account the essential physical-layer features of practical cellular networks.
In contrast to works that focus on the theoretical performance of abstract MIMO channels, MIMO Communication for Cellular Networks emphasizes the practical performance of realistic MIMO systems. A unified set of system simulation results highlights relative performance gains of different MIMO techniques and provides insights into how best to use multiple antennas in cellular networks under various conditions.
MIMO Communication for Cellular Networks describes single-user, multiuser, network MIMO technologies and system-level aspects of cellular networks, including channel modeling, resource scheduling, interference mitigation, and simulation methodologies. The key concepts are presented with sufficient generality to be applied to a wide range of wireless systems, including those based on cellular standards such as LTE, LTE-Advanced, WiMAX, and WiMAX2. The book is intended for use by graduate students, researchers, and practicing engineers interested in the physical-layer design of state-of-the-art wireless systems.

An Authoritative Reference
By Angel
A research darling since its inception in the late 1990s, MIMO communication has become a central feature of many wireless systems. At a time when the prophecies of exponential growth in wireless data traffic are becoming a reality, the ability of MIMO to squeeze more bits/s in every precious unit of bandwidth comes as a welcome relief. This book, authored by members of the Bell Labs team that pioneered MIMO and first drove it into standardization, offers a view of what this technology means and, especially, of how it fits into modern cellular systems. The coverage balances fundamentals and practice, being neither overly academic nor encumbered by the specificity of any given system. That makes it both accessible and broad, likely to appeal to audiences ranging from graduate students to industry practitioners. Altogether, "MIMO Communication for Cellular Networks" should become a reference in the shelf of anyone engaged in research related to MIMO.

Excellent and suprisingly rigourous reference
By Jeffrey Andrews
One might not expect such a theoretically-grounded book from three authors who have spent most or all of their careers in industry, even at the might Bell Labs. This book builds on rigorous information theoretic fundamentals to show the promise of different forms of MIMO communication. Perhaps the most interesting chapter of the book is Chapter 6, which describes their insights into how these techniques actually perform in a cellular system, which is the most important application. They give credible and detailed simulation results that are neatly summarized with a "takeaway" box at the end of each subsection. It would have been good however if they could have considered the effect of mobility on MU-MIMO and Network MIMO, which I believe to be quite severe. Also, Chapter 7 is useful but it would have been even more useful to explain a bit more about how MIMO is used in LTE, and any insights they have into the "why's" and how it actually is typically practiced by companies (e.g. I think it is pretty misleading to imply that anyone is getting close to 1Gbps in LTE-Advanced, regardless of what type of MIMO you have).
