About the Author
Owen Barfield (1898 1997), the British philosopher and critic, has been called the First and Last Inkling, because of his influence and enduring role in the group known as the Oxford Inklings. The Inklings included C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams. It was Barfield who first advanced the ideas about language, myth, and belief that became identified with the thinking and art of the Inklings. He is the author of numerous books, including "Poetic Diction: A Study in Meaning; Romanticism Comes of Age; Unancestoral Voice; History in English Words;" and "Worlds Apart: A Dialogue of the 1960s." His history of the evolution of human consciousness, "Saving the Appearances: A Study in Idolatry, " achieved a place in the list of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Century.

Rather Short

This short collection of only three essay, speeches rather, from the venerable Owen Barfield is a mediocre example of the works he produced. The introduction states that many of the ideas he produced here are expansions to his previous essays and books, and having read them I concur.

This book is worth picking up to freshen up ideas of consciousness and language relations, certainly not for setting a foundation for which I would suggest Poetic Diction, hands down.

The real gem in this collection, though, is the final chapter about creating new habits and society given understanding played out in the two previous chapters. An encouraging word for those who wish to proceed with an enlightened life.

Small is Beautiful

I've used this book for several years in history courses to introduce Barfield's ideas. As a later, condensed version of his thinking, it pays off big. Yes, if you're taken with these ideas, you should read Poetic Diction and my favorite, Saving the Appearances. But History, Guilt & Habit summarizes important ideas in clear and direct language, without the strangeness of "alpha thinking" and other Barfieldian terms that pepper some of his other works. Because the chapters in this book were transcribed from lectures, it has a direct and conversational tone that makes it accessible in a way that longer works may not be. As an introduction to Barfield's thinking, this is as good as it gets.

A book of Christian anthropology from a British philosopher of the early 20th century. Barfield was an original thinker and intelligent person, but his theories skew abstract and sometimes appear to prefigure New Age trends. Not my cup of tea, but some might enjoy it, particularly fans of this author.

Great information with a balanced view and important information for energy work.

I heard about Jason on Coast to Coast and bought this book for Kindle app before the interview. The interview was so bad, I regretted the purchase and thought the book would be a big let down. Well, I was wrong. Jason is a quite young man, very soft spoken, interviewers think a guy this young and not trying to shill products or deliver some astounding message, is to be suspected as disingenuous or making things up. But the good interviews I've seen where they plumb the depths of Jason's amazing experiences, are rewarded with information those of us seekers want and need to know. I have so many things in common with Jason it was really spooky, but he is apparently called to serve and deliver information in these times. The actual author, Bob Mitchell, queried Jason on all the very up to date subjects like the hidden space programs, Corey Goode, end times, prophecies, Planet X, etc. etc. that are current right now. Jason doesn't fall for the traps of agreeing or endorsing any of these subjects and stresses a wait and see attitude, which I agree with, as we are seeminglg being deluged with information every single day about some horrible future, some heavenly future and everything in between, but the bottom line as Jason says that what is most important is that each of us need to heal ourselves, of our karma, things we need to forgive others for and ourselves as well. Nothing else really matters. The most important thing to me in the book was the information he was taught on the Egyptian Postures, which directly relate to ChiGong, TaiChi, and other such energy methods. And as he points out, ChiGong and the postures and other methods like these are THE key to this healing. I am in the process of learning Dragon and Tiger ChiGong online with Bruce Frantzis Engergy Arts, so I got Jason's Postures book and DVD and right away you can feel that these postures are like tuning the human antenna to different energies. I will be learning them all along with Dragon and Tiger health ChiGong, and I think these are important methods to learn, especially for us older "boomers" to keep us energetically balanced as our generation phases out of here and leaves it the next wave of spiritual warriors to bring more light to this planet and lead to a better future for mankind. Get the book, or Kindle version, pick up the Egyptain postures DVD and book, get some shingite rods or the Russian ones, and check out Bruce Frantzis books and online courses, which to me make learning ChiGong much easier, and get your energy cleared of blocks and things that hold you back, you will enjoy Jason's book and it will inspire you to action.

THANKS, THANKS, THANKS for publishing this incredible book. I couldn't put it down, Every chapter was filled with interesting topics of which I was already interested in. I encourage anyone who wants to learn about time-lines, time-travelers, ETs, bloodlines, Egyptian poses, crystals, and many more other fascinating views needs to read this book.I have a sixth sense when it comes to filtering out fact from fiction and I believe that Jason is for real. This book is truly mind blowing.
I can't wait for more books from Jason and Bob. We need more opportunities to learn about what has been kept secret for ages.

A great overall approach to Lean and Continuous Improvement

I found Gemba Kaizen 2nd Edition, provided a refreshing perspective of the technical side of Lean for those who use the tools and simultaneously present them in an easy to understand manner for those looking for something to "try". Students of Lean, who are being taught what Lean is, will have a better understanding of the "Why" and the "How" in the application of the tools - something that may not be readily apparent in some training classes. Interestingly enough, the author addresses how management can / should use Lean in daily operations and what it means for them. This is certainly an interesting perspective of how Lean "should be" led on a daily basis as (at least in my experience) I've rarely seen any lean training programs address this.

The second half of the book focuses on more than 20 different case studies of successful lean projects led by the Kaizen Institute. I found this very interesting as I'm constantly hearing from different people that Lean is useful only in manufacturing and cannot be applied to any other industry, the standard "we're different from them" response. However, the selections in the book dispel that myth as they highlight a wide range of industries where Lean has been applied successfully including: Medical, Logistics, Electronics and even Transportation (airports.) Some case studies were brief while others were more in depth. I appreciated the author's intent to highlight that Lean can be applied almost universally and successfully too. As someone who's implemented Lean before in various settings, I found myself wanting to learn more about the details of the projects, to see what worked and what didn't work. A drawback indeed but the case studies were definitely useful and intriguing enough to make me reconsider how I might better apply Lean in my job.

Good improvement from last edition.

Overall it is a great introduction to kaizen and the fundamentals of lean management. About half of the book is case studies so it was a quick read for 400+ pages. The variety of case studies are great. It dispels any myth that kaizen only works in Japan or is for only manufacturing. A smaller number of case studies with more details in each of how they got started would be my kaizen idea. Does kaizen ever fail? Maybe the 2nd edition could have included some case studies of unsuccessful examples and what we can learn from them. I'm sure not everybody succeeds with kaizen. In the book maybe there are a few too many Japanese words but I can see the need to learn the technical lingo to make things easier in some cases. Footnote explanations of each new vocabulary word would be my kaizen idea. It's hard to believe more companies aren't doing kaizen already when it is so commonsense and effective! I'm glad I picked this up, now only if I can get my boss to read it! An executive summary version would be useful.

Still one of *the* leading gurus for Kaizen & Lean

After reading Mr. Imai's work a decade or longer ago, I revisited his books over the past year and found that the insights and ideas about Kaizen are still timeless and powerful. Mr. Imai learned directly from Taiichi Ohno, one of the famed creators of the Toyota Production System.

The book "Gemba Kaizen" talks about moving beyond kaizen (continuous improvement) to an approach that is also "gemba" focused (gemba meaning the "actual place" or the place where the work is actually done). These are fundamental concepts in the Lean management approach. While the book's title may make one think the book is only about kaizen methods, Mr. Imai uses the term kaizen to refer to the broader Toyota Production System, so the book covers other topics like 5S, standard work, and 3P (lean design).

The updated version has new case studies from around the world, including more from healthcare settings.

Very good and intriguing book

I loved the book. The initial summary of the book made me purchase it. Love unexpected happened to the main characters. Loved the intrigue and suspense surrounding the secondary character Clayton. Apart from minor grammatical errors, the book was easy to follow and enjoy. Would recommend this book as an easy read. I would like to read more from this author in the future.

To be and to find 'the needle in a haystack'-must be love.

4.25 stars. This story is both well written and takes a unique approach to the convenience theme. Sean Davenport is owner and CEO of a multi million dollar corporation, both his parent are deceased, he is an only child and wants and heir; but do to a rare blood disorder, he can only sire a child with a woman who also has this disorder. After years of searching for a white female with this condition, his investigators find Danielle Knox, a black female sculptor. Sean arranges to meet Danielle at one of her showings, they spend the night together and ultimately fall in love, she gets pregnant and they marry. A lovely romance with a bit of mystery and attempted murder and acts of betrayal and forgiveness. I was close to not liking her best friend- i hate 30 year olds behaving like a fifteen year old best friend might.

HOME RUN FIRST TIME AT BAT!

That's exactly what Ms. Jackson has produced with her first publication. This story does not have one negative vibe about it. Everything you can possibly want when starting a book is included in this story and this author used all of her writing skills to make sure she held you captive from the first to the last stroke of her pen. I am still astounded that this is her first attempt to swim in the pool consisting of writers to keep your eyes on. And believe you me, Ms. Jackson jumped right into the deepest part of the pool and began to swim with the big dogs!! She established her superior skills at the onset and proceeded to improve upon them throughout the telling of this extremely provocative and intriguing story.

Intrigue, suspense, hot loving, unusual twists and an HEA all are wrapped up, explained and conquered in this unique storyline. Oh, oh, oh - the suspense!!! This story will have you tightly wound within its grip with the question of "Who Done It", ringing constantly through your - I want to know - mind. Not one emotion is left untouched by this author while weaving this reading delicacy for our pleasure. Baby mama drama has never been experienced this well. What more can you ask for? I am looking forward to seeing what Ms. Jackson has in that creative brain of hers, in future stories, she has yet to unfold. If they are like this, we are in store for a rare treat. I sincerely hope we will not have to wait too long. The timespan she allows between her books will answer the question of whether or not she is ready to graduate from the swimming pool into the ocean where many more quality writers reside. Can she still continue to swim with the big dogs in a more turbulent and diverse environment, or will she succumb to just being ordinary? Only time will tell; but for now, in this present time, she is definitely in the race, a very strong contender.

Chess For Juniors Series: "Winning Chess Tmts for Jrs"

THE SERIES IN GENERAL:

There are currently three books published in what I consider to be the best series of chess books for ages 9 on up (this would include adults too!) that take an absolute beginner to an advanced level of play. I have noted that there will be a fourth, most advanced book in this series called "More Unbeatable Chess for Juniors" (expanding on "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors").

BACKGROUND:

"Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors" was published in 2004 and is the third book in the series. The author, Robert Snyder's students won numerous National Championships. After doing research I found that the author is a strong master, rated USCF over 2300 and internationally over 2400. He also has produced 36 first place championship winners at national championships (a national record). His chess teams travel around the world and nation on a regular basis and compete. The author has extensive experience in introducing chess to beginners holding another record by having taught over 170,000 children at school programs over many years.

STRUCTURE OF "WINNING CHESS TOURNAMENTS FOR JUNIORS": This is the perfect book to continue from the author's "Chess for Juniors" book. It is designed as a training guide and also provides a lot of structured material for study to compliment the other books in the series.

There are eight chapters many of which cover a lot of material not seen in other books. This makes "Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors" very unique! I consider this a good thing. I found that this book is just packed with information that will help you do much better in tournaments, and in many cases can make the difference between you becoming a great player or lapsing into a disorganized state. You are certain to be making many mistakes that this book will correct! Because of what "Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors" covers it is difficult to explain its structure without looking at the material covered. I will say that this book contains some extreme humor that goes way beyond the basic "Chess for Juniors" book. Kids may fall out of their chair laughing.

MATERIAL COVERED:

a. Chapter One is all about what it takes to be a successful tournament competitor. It will help you know exactly what to look for when trying to find the right chess teacher for you. It suggests other books for reading and helps you to form a good, well rounded chess library. It covers how you should practice and gives good ideas and advice (i.e. it tells why playing irregular forms of chess like bughouse hurts your overall game). It explains how to condition your self for tournaments.

b. Chapter Two tells you all about how tournaments work (parents should read this and the first chapter!). You will learn the inner workings of the most important tournament rules (including some complicated ones) that is guaranteed to help you do better in tournaments. Getting the rule book alone is not good enough. It doesn't explain how to use these rules to your favor or what to watch out for. "Winning Chess Tournaments for Juniors" will make you a shark in the sea of rules!

c. Chapter Three is on Chess Psychology. I haven't seen any other books that cover the practical use of chess psychology that are directed at a scholastic player. I want to say this is the most useful chapter yet, but then realize just how important the other ones are - so I won't go there! Setting realistic goals in chess, building self confidence, what to actually do during play and the reasons why we make mistakes in analysis is the main focus of this absolutely fantastic chapter.

d. Chapter Four is all about preparing an opening system. I found it to provide not only very important ideas in what to look for in your own openings, but how to set up the main lines of your system in chart form for easy study. An actual complete opening system is provided - so you in effect also find this book to be an opening book! It doesn't provide the ideas behind the moves in the system it provides, but you will find that the ideas behind the moves to the exact opening system it provides are found in the other books in the series.

e. Chapter Five is a complete tactics workbook! It organizes the most important tactics for you to learn by type of pattern. It is rather comprehsensive and this is the largest chapter in the book.

f. Chapter Six is on the endgame. The author continues with the most important endgames from where his "Chess for Juniors" book left off. I you combine these two books you have comprehensive coverage of all the basic endgames.

g. Chapters Seven and Eight are on six of the author's national scholastic chess champions. Each player has at least one game with analysis along with pictures and information on the life of these superkids. You will find the games and players to be interesting.

WHO IS THIS BOOK IS FOR:

I would recommend this book for children ages 9 on up of average reading ability or better, or for adults (don't be fooled by the "Juniors" in the title in these books as they are just as much for adults). A knowledge of basic strategy (as covered in "Chess for Juniors") is necessary to get the full value of this book. If you are a player rated above 700 and under 1900 you will find you are at the right levels for this book. Consider getting the author's "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" book as it perfectly compliments this one with additional and non-repetitious material (an advantage of reading the entire series by this author). I would recommend getting the author's most advanced book, "More Unbeatable Chess for Juniors" which I have been informed will be out in May, 2005 and will expand on "Unbeatable Chess Lessons for Juniors" with many current games and a heavy focus on opening theory but keeping the concept of analyzing very move in every game (I cannot wait until it comes out!).

The MOST HELPFUL book I have ever read (It covers a lot of stuff to help you learn to train in chess the right way).

I was wondering for a long time while playing in chess tournaments what was the best way to train. This was to improve my game and to make me perform better in tournaments. I had a lot of books that just had materials to learn from. But I wanted to know what to study, how to study and then when I get to the tournament what to do to put me in the best shape.

WELL, WINNING CHESS TOURNAMENTS FOR JUNIORS, WAS THE BOOK I WAS LOOKING FOR. Not only did it cover all of those things, but it has some really cool material for actuall study. It was fun too because it used funny true stories like about the "Chess Genie" and what other kids try and do to disburb you while you play.

But I liked also the stuff about the rules that isn't told to you in the rule book. And the parts about how the thinking processes make typical mistakes. This book shows you using real positions from actual games where you typically make mistakes under chess psycology.

Though if you just want lots of great materials on endgames to study, a set out opening system (completely outlined), lots of tactical problems that are the most important to learn, then for this alone this book is great. I agree with the other reviews who say there is not another chess book like this one.

Want to improve? Want to know how and what to study? Want some great material for study? Golly, I love this book (I do think the picture of the two kids on the front cover is cheesy and staged, so I am glad I didn't judge this book by the cover as I am certain those kids did not know anything about chess but the girl is cute and the boy is dorky looking).

COMPLETE CHESS TRAINING BOOK: Learn many things not found in other books!

As a USCF scholastic tournament player for over 3 years I thought I knew alot about studying and playing in tournaments. I got my rating up to about 1000 after about 2 years. Once year ago I got WINNING CHESS TOURNAMENTS FOR JUNIORS and started reading it and followed what was in it. Now a year later my rating has jumped to over 1450 and I gained way over 400 rating points!

Some of the things that this book helped me with is telling me about what to do to study and exactly how to study from material. I can see that most players do this wrong and will learn much more slowly. But this book will put you in the right direction.

It helped with teaching why I make mistakes in how I think. It helps teach you to use rules to your favor (there was a lot I didn't know that the regular rule book doesn't explan well). I liked learning about chess psychology.

There is a lot of study material on tatics, openings (it tells you how to prepare openings and gives you a complete system is very well thought out and useful), endgames and games from top kid champions that the author trained himself.

I had as my first book on chess CHESS FOR JUNIORS. WINNING CHESS TOURNAMENTS FOR JUNIORS continues with the tatics, openings and endgames from CHESS FOR JUNIORS.

Do you want to really improve quickly? WINNING CHESS TOURNAMENTS FOR JUNIORS did the trick for me and I would never have gained even half of the 450 rating points in one year without it! Every Chess Teacher and Parent of Chess Kids should read it and know it too (it tells how tournamnets work for parents and beginning coaches).

One thing. It has a lot of funny stories about chess kids. It is written very clearly so a kid can read it.

YOU WILL IMPROVE A LOT FROM THIS BOOK!!!

This book is broken up into two sections brooding chicks comes first and incubating/hatching second.
The author feels that you should be able to raise the chicks to layers before you worry about hatching eggs.
I felt that the information on brooding was complete and through, advanced beginners or higher levels of poultry enthusiasts might find this section redundant.
However, I would say that if you can't raise chickens you can't hatch any eggs. It's worth the money, in my opinion.

Terrific Resource for the Chicken Hearted

I don't think there's a more reliable source for chicken info than Gail Damerow, and this book does not disappoint. It came yesterday and I sat down with it after dinner. Before I knew it I'd read half the book! Her writing really is entertaining and her tips most welcome. I'm no longer a newbie with backyard poultry but I still got lots of management ideas I'd never thought of or read about elsewhere.

Lots of important information!

We were in the middle of an incubator situation so we bought the Kindle version of this book to have instantly. I will be ordering the paper version to include in my little Ag library! It is perfect for a newbie to DIY backyard farming flocks and its availability to the Kindle was a real lifesaver....11 little lives to be exact!
