Awesome book, detailed how-to on creating better images for online products!

If you've ever tried to buy something online, and wasn't sure if it was a ripoff because of a grimy or blurry picture, take that as a lesson. It shows how much a product image can affect our point of view on whether we like something or not.

This book seeks to address that issue! I was surprised to see so much detail here. I have sold some products on craigslist and ebay, but never really put much emphasis on the product image. In the book George mentions that "The first contact customers have with your product is through your pictures", something that's so obvious that it's looked over. Any serious entrepreneur selling on eBay will probably tell you that the picture matters a LOT.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a detailed breakdown on how to photograph the products they sell. It'll give you a huge advantage especially among the mass of similar products online. Even people who just have a lot of stuff lying around in their house that they can sell will benefit from this.

So much useful advice jammed into one little book!

Fantastic. Well written, great illustrations. Just flawless, chock full of useful photographic advice for selling product on EBay or Etsy. I've taken amateur photography courses, and got more useful advice out of this book -- much more -- than I did from a semester of futzing about in a college class.

Practical Wisdom

There are a lot of data warehousing books out there that try to answer the question: 'Why'? Why data warehouses are needed to help businesses make better decisions - why the OLTP systems that run the business can't do this - and sometimes even why businesses ought to invest in data warehouses. These books were terrifically useful to us years ago, when we needed help (and scholarly footnotes) in our data warehouse project proposals. This book is not one of those - it is all about:

How

How to actually design and build a repository that will deliver real value to real people. In this reviewer's opinion, Ralph Kimball's many contributions related to the 'how' of data warehousing stand alone.

An engineer wishing to jump-start his or her data warehouse education would need to read Ralph's Data Warehouse Toolkit first edition, his Data Webhouse Toolkit... a bunch of "Data Warehouse Designer" Intelligence Enterprise magazine articles... AND lurk on the Data Warehousing List Server...for a few years (all terrific resources - by the way) - in order to stockpile the knowledge that is crisply presented here.

No shortcuts taken by the authors that I can spot: all of the toughest dimensional design issues that I've tripped on - and that I can remember surfacing on in discussion groups over the past few years - are addressed in this significantly updated text. Not all of the solutions are 'pretty' - but it is clear that they thoughtfully address the problem. This approach, in my opinion, instills student confidence - and lets us know that we are getting sound instruction - not dogma.

The authors have been listening to and addressing the data warehouse community's 'pain' through periodicals and posts for years - but this book pulls these point solutions together very nicely. I learned a surprising number of really useful new techniques, and was genuinely enlightened by the 'Present Imperatives and Future Outlook' section.

As in the first edition, there is minimal philosophical lecturing, and zero religion. Instead, we get generous helpings of real-world case studies - aptly applied to progressively more advanced series of design concepts.

This style absolutely works for me. And I suspect that engineering mindsets typical of the folks that build these things will likely agree. In short, the Data Warehouse Toolkit Second Edition will significantly lighten the load of books that I carry between data warehouse engagements.

Top-notch course in dimensional data warehouses

If you want to understand data warehouse design either as user, architect or developer, you need to read this book cover to cover.
Things I like about this book:
* Coverage of all core principles in dimensional data modeling using examples. Ralph does not just lecture to you -- he shows you how to put it into practice
* Coverage of a vast variety of domains. This alone makes the book a must-read
* Recap of major principles at the end of the book to bring it all together
* Excellent writing -- Ralph does not treat you like a dummy; neither does he assume that you have an IQ north of 200
* When you purchase this book, you are in effect purchasing a sliver of the combined knowledge of both authors in the data warehousing field. Highly recommended
I implemented a data warehouse using some of these principles back in 1999. The project was a resounding success and is the most popular application in the financial services firm that I implemented it in. (Infact when I lost my job at an Internet company, they immediately offered me a job based on this implementation). The only sad part to the whole story is that we made a few mistakes in implementation that are now very difficult to correct because the data warehouse has become core to the business -- we have too many end-user applications riding on it!

An Indispensible Book

After six years of creating data warehouse applications, making a plethora of mistakes and learning stuff the hard way, I wish I had had this book at the start! Every other page offers a solution to some problem or other that I have had. In the project I am just starting I am facing new challenges and am finding help with them as well. The best part is how solutions I used in the past which were appropriate for those problems are contrasted with solutions for problems like the ones I am facing now. Almost as bad as solving a problem the wrong way (or overlooking it entirely) is reusing an old solution that does not fit the new problem. This book clearly spells out when each solution is appropriate. I can not speak too highly about how useful this book will be for you!

Some simple insights complicated by an obsessively detailed story

This book is for scholars of the anthropology of cognition only. It is heavily, heavily footnoted with many bibliographic references and links to sources that only a perfectly informed reader would ever need to know -- that perfectly informed reader being the author herself. The gist of the story is simple enough...much obsessively scholarly verbiage is wasted in telling that story

Respecifying Cognition
By Another Reader
Many readers are introduced to Jean Lave's work through Situated Learning (1991) with Etienne Wenger. However, readers interested in the genesis of Lave's two decade long effort to critique a reified understanding of cognition created in the narrow confines of a sterile experimental room by situating the study of learning within the everyday activities of social life may find Cognition in Practice (and also Everyday Cognition (1985) with Barbara Rogoff) insightful. Though the cognitive sciences themselves have moved on from the `information processing' or `transmission' model of learning that is an artifact of the experimental method and a 1960s fascination with the computer, this model of cognition remains endemic in formal educational today and particularly in educational policy decisions such as the No Child Left Behind Act that reveal a belief in the infallibility of science, so Lave's critique remains relevant today, two decades after the book was written.

However, Cognition in Practice aims not merely at critique but at developing a new framework for thinking about cognition - respecifying a `psychological theory of cognition' as an `anthropological' one - and the book is divided into two sections to address each. This endeavor of theory creation does make the book a cumbersome, though not difficult, read at times. The greatest challenge, Lave notes, is involved in depopulating reified meanings of the vocabulary of cognition that we no longer question and respecifying them in specific social/anthropological terms. Lave, in Cognition in Practice, makes the effort to address such dualities as theory/practice and mind/body, revaluing the latter concepts with respect to learning (cognition/learning is another such duality). Yes, two decades later, this is no longer groundbreaking.

Though Cognition in Practice is derived from anthropological ethnographic fieldwork and is therefore empirically-based criticism, it shares many of the goals if not the particular focus of literary critical theory. Indeed, in the two decades since the book was written, the lines have been blurred between what Gee (2000) identifies as more than 20 research programs within the great `social turn' in the social sciences and humanities, as ideas and methodologies have cross-populated within critical communities of practice - Gee's (1999) own "Big D" Discourse is Lave and Wenger's (1991) `Communities of Practice,' for example.

Cognition in Practice lays the groundwork for Situated Learning (1991), and though the latter is probably more familiar to readers and the concepts more refined (e.g. "whole persons acting in social worlds" becomes "legitimate peripheral participation"), readers interested in the cognitive basis for sociocultural theories of cognition that place learning as an activity located not exclusively in the brain but socially constructed in interaction with others and artifacts in everyday contexts will find Cognition in Practice useful.

Rom�ntica y muy er�tica, pero sobre todo una trama que atrapa

Para quienes a�n no han le�do esta entretenida novela, no se preocupen, no incurrir� en spoilers en la presente rese�a. Le� esta novela, despu�s de haber le�do las anteriores novelas de esta autora (“Pasaporte a la felicidad” y “La tentaci�n”), y debo decir que el talento narrativo de esta escritora me ha sorprendido.
En primer lugar, debo partir que esta serie de novelas tiene una premisa muy interesante que se aprecia con mayor claridad, conforme se va avanzando con la lectura de la sucesi�n de libros. Las novelas se presentan como novelas rom�ntico – er�ticas, premisa que se cumple en cada una de ellas. Sin embargo, al desenvolver la madeja de las tramas, descubr� que la historia de Claire y Marco es mucho m�s profunda de lo que imagin� al leer el pr�logo de “La Tentaci�n”, en las Islas Canarias. Prologo dicho sea de paso, que es como un puntillazo que te presenta, los personaje, el ambiente y el tono de la novela; y te deja con ganas de querer saber m�s de aquel peque�o mundo narrativo. Para ordenar mi comentario, abordar� dos instancias, personajes y trama.
Empezare por abordar el tema de los personajes.
Mestre nos presenta una historia rom�ntica, pasional, muy fuerte; con un protagonista masculino (Marco), apabullante, obsesivo, posesivo, al punto que al cerrar el primer libro uno se pregunta si realmente ama, o podr� alguna vez, amar a Claire, la protagonista femenina. �Incluso hay momentos en los que uno se sorprende sacudiendo el kindle con ambas manos y diciendo, pero Claire, qu� le has visto a este sujeto! As� de fuerte es la conexi�n que logra la autora con nosotros, sus lectores. Y justamente, sus personajes son uno de los fuertes de la novela.
Pero no se crea que la conducta de Marco se trata de una acumulaci�n sin ton ni son de clich�s extra�dos novelas er�ticas del mont�n. La conducta y las man�as de Marco, y en general de todos los personajes de Mestre, tienen motivaciones. En particular, descubriremos un pasado plagado de secretos, traiciones y pasiones inconfesables. No exagero, pero no puedo ahondar en m�s detalles sin correr el riesgo de arruinarles la lectura de esta novela. �Y vaya la pena que merece ser le�da! Solo se�alar� que el personaje de Marco est� impecablemente construido, sus caprichos, sus man�as est�n perfectamente justificadas por pasado y por lo que siente por Claire, incluso dir� que hasta su pasado influye en sus sentimientos hacia Claire y eso lo descubriremos en los dos �ltimos cap�tulos de la novela.
En el mismo rubro de personajes, Mestre ha modelado con mucho cuidado a su personaje femenino. Puedo decir que se nota cuando hay un trabajo atento y un cari�o especial hacia la propia creaci�n, y eso salta a la vista cuando el escritor construye un personaje como Claire. Me explico. Chica rubia, ojos azules, medio inglesa medio espa�ola, guapa, veintid�s a�os. Inmediatamente a uno se le prenden todas las alarmas, justo los ingredientes, para hacer una pastiche sentimental del mont�n en el que la protagonista es poco m�s que un monigote de ventr�locuo o una Barbie. Pero no. Mestre ha hecho de Claire un personaje atractivo, incluso travieso a veces, con su propio sello de autora, pero con rasgos muy definidos, sin dejar de ser lo que es, es decir una chica de veintid�s a�os. Las chicas veintea�eras, y los lectores, en general, estar�n de acuerdo, al conocerla, que Claire se comporta, siente, piensa y act�a, justamente como una chica de veintid�s a�os lo har�a. Eso es un acierto de Mestre, haberse sumergido en este personaje de manera tan intensa, pero sin que nosotros, los lectores, lo notemos demasiado. Ha tejido este personaje, sin dejar ver las puntadas que ha dado.
Y eso se nota en los detalles de la personalidad de Claire. Claire es seductora, sin ser promiscua, pasional sin dejar de ser una chica enamorada. Y muy curiosa. No incurro en spoiler si digo que ese tendencia a ser tan testaruda y a “salir corriendo” en ciertas circunstancias, le dotan de car�cter al personaje. Pero no se crea que es una casquivana o una mujer d�bil, al contrario tiene una rara combinaci�n de determinaci�n e �mpetu despreocupado, casi irresponsable, a veces. Es dif�cil describirla con m�s detalle, lo m�s sensato ser�a invitarlos a leerla.
El otro personaje relevante es Charlie, es un personaje muy importante, importancia que se va desvelando paso a paso, entre Marco y Claire, con la lectura de la sucesi�n de novelas; lamentablemente, no puedo comentar mucho sobre Charlie porque echar�a a perder la experiencia de la lectura de los libros.
Finalmente, la trama.
Esto es lo que diferencia a Paulette Mestre de lo que esperar�amos de una serie de novelas rom�ntico er�ticas, es el manejo de la trama. La historia de Claire y Marco, y, luego se descubrir� de Charlie, y esos “cuatro hermanos” del t�tulo de la saga, empieza con una historia de amor y pasi�n entre una chica y un chico algo mayor, relaci�n en la que ella descubre su sexualidad y ese v�nculo tan intenso entre el amor y sexo que no se puede explicar y que solo se puede narrar. En este nivel, las peripecias de amor y pasi�n entre Claire y Marco, son llevadas de manera atrevida, a veces traviesa, de modo que incita al lector a enterarse de que pasar� m�s adelante. Creo que las escenas sexuales enganchan mucho, y uno se queda con el gustito de enterarse de m�s. Pero eso no es todo, sino que la relaci�n entre Claire y Marco intriga, como dije m�s arriba, uno se pregunta, al mediar la primera novela, c�mo terminar�n estos personajes, qu� les ocurrir�, terminar�n destruy�ndose mutuamente, se cansar� Claire de Marco o se someter� a �l. Y finalmente, pregunta que solo se comprender� al terminar “La Manipulaci�n”; �qu� busca Marco en Claire?, �por qu� seducirla justo a ella? �y por qu� pierde la cabeza justo por ella?
Mestre tiene el talento de concluir sus novelas, resolviendo conflictos en ella, pero haciendo un h�bil uso del “enganche”. Esto era algo que me preocupaba cuando termin� la primera. Se tratar�a de una saga o solo era un truco de la autora para hacernos comprar m�s material suyo. Y esto es algo que se nota m�s en la tercera (“La Manipulaci�n”), cuando se nos va revelando el contenido de los secretos que se esconden sobre Claire y sobre el pasado de Marco, Charlie y los cuatro hermanos del t�tulo de la saga. Al llegar al final de “La Manipulaci�n”, nos queda la sensaci�n que nos han sumergido poco a poco, en una trama que excede, envolviendo y rodeando, y quiz�s justificando, la historia de amor de Claire y Marco; unos eventos secretos y acallados, en los que la pasi�n, el rencor, la traici�n, la cobard�a, el inter�s ego�sta, incluso la lascivia, pero tambi�n el amor m�s sublime, est�n implicados. Tanto as� que al llegar al enganche con el que termina “La Manipulaci�n”, uno no deja de pensar en c�mo acabar� todo eso y nos deja con la sensaci�n de querer leer la �ltima de las novelas, con la convicci�n que los secretos a�n no han terminado de revelarse y que esta historia seguir� ganando en pasi�n, en emociones y en secretos inconfesables.
Mi recomendaci�n. Bajase las tres novelas, h�gase palomitas de ma�z, o de papas fritas, o de lo que le apetezca, y si�ntese en el sof� de su casa el fin de semana. Lo va a pasar muy entretenido. Son poco menos de siete d�lares por una historia que no decepciona y que por el contrario deja con la sensaci�n de querer m�s. �Dan ganas de pedirle ya la cuarta parte a Paulette Mestre! No nos puede dejar as�.

Debo decir que me encanto el libro. La historia es atrapante. Es muy �gil de leer....no pod�a parar de hacerlo. Es un libro que re�ne romance, erotismo, intriga, amistad....no le falta nada.
Lo �nico negativo, pero sin serlo tanto, es que esperaba m�s avances en esta tercera entrega...m�s revelaciones e incluso algo para saber de los dem�s personajes, como Charly ya que libro es bien largo....y no me gustar�a una conclusi�n r�pida.
Lo recomiendo 100% ....solo espero pronto la continuaci�n ya que si no se pierde el hilo de la historia.
Felicitaciones Paulette, un gran aplauso para ti....un gran placer leerte.

Mourning Philology draws on Varuzhan and his work to present a history of the national imagination, which is also a history of national philology, as a reaction to the two main philological inventions of the nineteenth century: mythological religion and the native. In its first part, the book thus gives an account of the successive stages of the orientalist philology. The last episode in this story of national emergence took place in 1914 in Constantinople, when the literary journal Mehyan gathered around Varuzhan the great names to come of Armenian literature in the diaspora

About the Author

Marc Nichanian was Professor of Armenian Studies at Columbia University from 1996 to 2007 and is currently Visiting Professor at Sabanci University, Istanbul, in the Department of Cultural Studies. His publications in English include The Historiographic Perversion and Writers of Disaster.
G.M. Goshgarian has translated from the Armenian the first part of Hagop Oshagan's epic novel Remnants, which won a PEN translation award in 2009 and the translations in Marc Nichanian's Writers of Disaster.

Jeff Fort is Assistant Professor of French at the University of California, Davis, the translator of a number of books by authors including Maurice Blanchot, Jacques Derrida, and Jean-Luc Nancy, and the author of The Imperative to Write: Destitutions of the Sublime in Kafka, Blanchot, and Beckett (Fordham).

Phil. degree from Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai. He joined the Department of Chemistry, St. Joseph's College in 1987. He has put in 22 years of service in teaching organic and bio-organic chemistry to M.Sc. and B.Sc. students. He has guided several M.Phil. scholars. Now, he is guiding Ph.D. scholars in the field of Natural Products Chemistry. He has published several research papers in journals of national and international repute. He was a fellow of the UNESCO-sponsored training program in Advanced Analytical Techniques in Chemistry organized by University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, in the year 1992.
