Amazon.com Review
In her lifetime, Rachel Carson published only four books. She was a careful writer and meticulous researcher, for one thing, and she worked as a government scientist until the success of books like Silent Spring and The Sea Around Us enabled her to turn to her own writing full-time. She also published several magazine pieces, many of which biographer Linda Lear gathers here, along with letters and journal entries. In one piece that is characteristic both of her modesty and of her wit, Carson remarks on her then-unusual status of being an "average-sized woman" and a scientist, one who had just become "a biographer of the sea." In another, Carson writes of the necessity of protecting shorelines from economic development that would hasten their erosion and subsequent destruction. Carson's many fans will take much pleasure in this anthology of her work. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
If fleeting sketches can sometimes say more than the fully realized work, this collection of journal entries, a TV script, speeches and articles by one of the pioneers of the modern environmental movement gracefully delivers. Pieces on the destruction of unique island eco-systems, the connection of music to nature and environmental "managed care" of waterfowl refuges offer sad testament to Carson's range, never to be further explored due to her early death from breast cancer, in 1964. Written with mesmeric intensity, Carson's first piece of published adult work, "Undersea," was accepted by the Atlantic in 1935. Reprinted here, it reveals her lasting obsession not only with the sea but with the antiquity and majestic continuity of life on earth. Her other famous passion, exposing the ravaging effects of pesticides, which was devastatingly depicted in her 1962 classic, Silent Spring, is defended here in a speech that marks the maturity of her voice. Highly informed and occasionally withering, this refutation of her big-business critics reveals the nasty arena she felt forced to enter. In other speeches, Carson, a trained biologist, laments the perceived distance between science and a language that can touch nonscientific people. For a TV script on the subject of clouds, she states, in a delicate synthesis of fact and poetry, "They are the writing of the wind on the sky." The careful gathering of fragments by Lear (author of the 1997 biography Rachel Carson), if presented a little too reverently, gives rare glimpses of Carson's personal vulnerability and of her strange fusion of restraint and fervor, offering a frequent sense of being in Carson's company.

From School Library Journal
YA-These brief excerpts from previously unpublished or uncollected writings provide YAs with samples of some of the most lyrical, clear scientific writing available in the fields of biology, ecology, and wildlife and wilderness conservation. A number of the excerpts included are from speeches Carson made before groups such as the Women's National Press Club. Each selection, whether letter, speech, or article, is preceded by a brief introduction that gives useful background information. The naturalist's struggle for financial security, her devotion to her work, and her fascination with the natural world are revealed both in her writing and in the editor's introductions. Lear also provides updates to Carson's writing where necessary, since much of this work was produced in the 1950s. Carson's call for wildlife conservation and preservation, her warnings about the dangers of pesticides, and about the need to preserve and protect our natural resources, however, are timeless.

Great Book
By Still Creek
We gave it to our 16 year old grand daughter who has an interest in the sciences. It is probably about the best philosophical background for the natural sciences one can read. Carson's writings did more for starting a growing environmental awareness than just about anyone else.

Quantitative Conservation Biology: Theory and Practice of Population Viability Analysis, by William F. Morris, Daniel F. Doak

Conservation biology relies not only on the general concepts, but on the specific methods, of population ecology to both understand and predict the viability of rare and endangered species and to determine how best to manage these populations. The need to conduct quantitative analyses of viability and management has spawned the field of "population viability analysis," or PVA, which, in turn, has driven much of the recent development of useful and realistic population analysis and modeling in ecology in general. However, despite calls for the increased use of PVA in real-world settings?developing recovery plans for endangered species, for example?a misperception remains among field-oriented conservation biologists that PVA models can only be constructed and understood by a select group of mathematical population ecologists.

Part of the reason for the ongoing gap between conservation practitioners and population modelers has been the lack of an easy-to-understand introduction to PVA for conservation biologists with little prior exposure to mathematical modeling as well as in-depth coverage of the underlying theory and its applications. Quantitative Conservation Biology fills this void through a unified presentation of the three major areas of PVA: count-based, demographic, and multi-site, or metapopulation, models. The authors first present general concepts and approaches to viability assessment. Then, in sections addressing each of the three fields of PVA, they guide the reader from considerations for collection and analysis of data to model construction, analysis, and interpretation, progressing from simple to complex approaches to answering PVA questions. Detailed case studies use data from real endangered species, and computer programs to perform all described analyses accompany the text.

The goal of this book is to provide practical, intelligible, and intuitive explanations of population modeling to empirical ecologists and conservation biologists. Modeling methods that do not require large amounts of data (typically unavailable for endangered species) are emphasized. As such, the book is appropriate for undergraduate and graduate students interested in quantitative conservation biology, managers charged with preserving endangered species, and, in short, for any conservation biologist or ecologist

Review
This book is unique because it is written much like a tutorial that describes the process of PVA in a well-organized and easy-to-follow manner and does so in sufficient detail (with specific real-world examples) to serve as a starting point for more detailed treatments. . . . The book is sure to appeal to a wide audience and should serve as a useful resource for those who wish to better understand PVAs, as well as for more experienced theoreticians and conservation practitioners. --Carlyle Brewster, American Entomologist

William Morris and Daniel Doak have written a comprehensive volume on population viability analyses (PVA) that integrates the theory of population ecology with the analytical tools necessary to synthesize observational data on the dynamics of populations. . . . The book is a thorough, quantitative treatment and should be approachable by conservation biologists and ecologists with an interest in learning the details and application of PVA. --William R. Clark, Landscape Ecology

This is a book we've needed for a decade. PVA is not only a bridge between science and policy, it is the flagship technology of conservation biology. When applied to strongly interacting species, it is also a foundational tool of ecosystem conservation. Thank goodness, therefore, that this book is readable. Morris and Doak draw on a treasury of experience and eschew complexity except where necessary. Their book is truly the definitive step in making PVA accessible to students and practitioners. Hooray! --Michael Soul, The Wildlands Project

Moon Knight Isn't Dead Yet
By Anarchy in the US
After the opening volume of Marvel's All-New Moon Knight by writer Warren Ellis and artist Declan Shalvey, I enjoyed it's done-in-one story telling with superb art work in challenging typical comic book norms--and this is from a person who never cared too much on the character. But after the first volume, that same creative team has left the series and replace it Brian Wood and Greg Smallwood. This made me a bit nervous because Wood, who I think is a great writer on his own creator-owned work and political material, doesn't do well with typical comic book affairs from DC and Marvel. And I never heard of Smallwood before, so I wasn't sure if this or any new creative team would come close to Ellis/Shalvey's vision, but to my surprise, Wood/Smallwood have come close and yet given their own spin on the character.

MOON KNIGHT VOL.2:DEAD WILL RISE collects issues #7-12. First ever African President of Akima General Aliman Lor is in New York to meet the United Nations in recognizing Akima as a country. General Lor is suspected of war crimes for siding with the rebel forces and overthrew the previous unelected governor many years ago, which means he has plenty of enemies. One of those enemies has hired a sniper to assassinate Lor, but not under the watchful eye of Moon Knight. But was the sniper really trying to kill Lor and Moon Knight? Because someone knows to undermine Moon Knight, even to the point where they want the Konshu spirit.

I'm surprised Wood decided to follow in Ellis's footsteps in terms of themes and writing structure, but I am glad as he does manage to follow well enough. Wood continues the done-in-one story style of Ellis, giving each issue a different feel and approach, yet leaves each issue weaving into a larger story here that comes together by issue #12. This makes Wood's work on MK a great successor to Ellis's set path, but also adding his own spin in subtle ways and giving a larger plot than mere single stories. The stories range from issue #7 of Moon Knight chasing and stopping a sniper, to stopping a terrorist heist in a building all from the perspective of camera phones, to a dreaming/hypnotic sequence within Marc Spectors mind and his psychiatrist's mind (yes, Spector's psychiatrist from issue 1 returns and plays a massive role in this arc. I won't spoil it), deals with stopping a UN officer from murdering general Lor, Spector dealing with a prison, and finally piecing the entire story arc together in issue #12. It keeps the cinematic feel and themes Ellis had, and I am impressed Wood has carried on Ellis work in a fun and interesting story arc.

And with continuing Ellis's framework, Declan Shalvey played a massive hand in Ellis's story structure and re-defining comic art narratives. Greg Smallwood plays very close to Shalvey's art style and ability to mess with comic book conventions. Smallwood uses similar art panels from the sniper issue, to issue 8 where the entire story is shown from the perspective of handheld camera phones, to the issue where we see Spector and the psychiatrists dream switching back and forth, to an entire issue of Spector dealing with a prison with no laws and faceless captures. Smallwood may not quite be up to the same level of Shalvey's, but he is close and his art is admirable.

Now my score is a 4 score out of 5 stars, but I'm rounding to 4 stars. I enjoyed this quite immensely, but I think the ending felt a bit underwhelming and a bit patched together with spotty parts. After reading all of Wood's story, there is a very ambiguous ending. I had to re-read from issue 7 and it does make sense, but it's something some readers might not catch. And there feels like there is story parts missing from issue 11 to 12. The time gap feel wrong.

Still, I enjoyed MOON KNIGHT VOLUME 2: DEAD WILL RISE from Brain Wood and Greg Smallwood taking over Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey's framework. I'm actually bummed out this creative team is leaving. Now Cullen Bunn will take over starting with Moon Knight Vol. 3: In the Night and we'll see if he has the chops to carry on Ellis/Wood work.

Good but not great
By Tyler Johnson
This is one of the most difficult reviews I have ever written. All I want is to judge Brian Wood and Greg Smallwood's arc on its own merits but the fact is that it came after Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey's groundbreaking arc Moon Knight Volume 1: From the Dead and it simply doesn't measure up. Brain Wood strips away the ethereal feel of the first volume, full of ambiguity of whether or not Marc Spector is truly the vanguard for the divine Khnonsu, and what he replaces it with feels grounded and smaller. Khonsu is real, Marc is out, and the enigmatic Dr. Warsame, from the first volume, is back but without the air of mystery she previously had.

Instead of six stand alone stories, Wood's arc ties together, and while the ride there is enjoyable, the ending is severely lacking. By the time you reach the final issue, all the wonderful tension the arc builds to that point simply fades away. The art is good but never reaches Shalvey's heights. This is a decent book that unfortunately doesn't stick the landing.

Strong Creators < > Strong Creative Team
By Danny Norbury
I have a lot of respect for author Brian Wood, however, he always seemed to me to be one of those writers who flourish with their own titles and struggle a bit when writing characters they did not create. DMZ, Northlanders, The Massive were all superbly written and plotted; however, some of his work in X-Men and again in this Moon Knight TP leaves much to be desired.

There is a comic technique known as the Marvel Method that many of the big publishers use to use (and in many cases still do). The concept is the writer puts together a bare bone script and the artist (who is suppose to be better at layout and visual storytelling) actually creates the comic. And while it certainly spawned nearly every iconic moment in the Golden Age of comics, it also was responsible for all the terrible comics created. When the artist and writer are not in synch, the results are very bad. I am unsure if the Marvel Method was used in this creation, but the disjoint between illustrator Greg Smallwood and Mr. Wood brings what could have been a great story to its knees.

Readers new to Moon Knight only need to understand one thing going in. The guy is crazy. I don't mean Frank Castle murderous/psychopathic crazy nor Deadpool babble like a mentally deficient monkey crazy, I mean full on personality dis-associative schizo cray-cray. He has multiple personalities and a deity complex that allows him to believe he was saved by an Egyptian god to save the travelers of the night. He cycles through enough characters to fill a comic, and uses the skills of each like his own Swiss army knife of crime fighting. Add to that the wealth, gadgets, detective skills of a Batman and you've got Moon Knight.

Mr. Wood does very well with that end of the spectrum. Capturing the craziness through change of uniforms, hallucinations, etc. Though to be honest I felt the team went a little too far in some cases so that it felt more fantastical than insane. In fact all the characters a well developed with clear motivations and multiple facets to their personality. The action scenes, dialogue, etc. work just as well and the plot (though at times very preachy) is serviceable enough.

Where the title falls flat, however, is everywhere in between. It is the panels between the set pieces that make or break any super hero comic. Some of this failure can be attributed as a bold experiment that didn't quite get the job done. There is one scene where a man is holding a floor of a skyscraper hostage and nearly all of the story is told through different camera views (news vans, security cams, cell phones, etc.) But most of the failure feels like the writer and artist never discussed the story. There are several pages where no dialogue takes place and the layout is such that it is easy to get lost, then there are full page panels where a full conversation takes place in the space between the characters. There was also at least two occasions where it was unclear whether the layout was 1 page or 2 which forced me to re-read the panels in the correct order.

Any writer/artist combo can setup a big set piece and execute a fight scene. But if the pages between each are not cohesive enough, the glue between these scenes are lost and the story falls apart. Unfortunately for this team of two talented creators, that is exactly what happened.

Step by Step to Excellence
By Amazon Customer
I found the advice in this book to be excellent. The author uses a down-to-earth style and a practical approach to issues involving mentoring. She has a structured method she recommends to develop the relationship between mentor and mentee. She emphasizes the importance of equality in the relationship between the two parties so that open communication can result. The value of trust, and how to nurture it, is also emphasized.
I liked the checklists and chapter summaries, which reinforced my learning. She gives the reader access to the tools she uses in her consulting business, which are valuable resources. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to become a proficient mentor.

Amazon.com Review
Book Description
Enjoy the ultimate companion to a comics masterpiece, as award-winning artist Dave Gibbons gives his own account of the genesis of WATCHMEN in this dust-jacketed hardback volume, opening his vast personal archives to reveal never-published pages, original character designs, page thumbnails, sketches and much more, including posters, covers and rare portfolio art. Featuring the breathtaking design of Chip Kidd and Mike Essl, WATCHING THE WATCHMEN is both a major art book in its own right, and the definitive companion to the graphic novel that changed an industry.

Voted among Time magazine's 100 Best Novels from 1923 to the present, a perennial bestseller over the past twenty years and widely considered the greatest graphic novel of all time, WATCHMEN is a gripping, labyrinthine piece of comic art, which has earned an acclaimed place in modern literary history.

"I've had a great time, re-visiting the very beginnings of Watchmen and unearthing material I haven't set eyes on for many years. As a fan myself, this is the kind of stuff I eat up and I'm sure the many devotees of the graphic novel will do the same!" says Gibbons.

A Q&A with Dave Gibbons on the Making of Watchmen

Question: You were tasked with drawing new illustrations of key shots from the new Watchmen film. Was it a difficult challenge to re-imagine your work in this movie format?

Dave Gibbons: I don’t think that I actually did many key shots from the film. I had to actually imagine them rather than exactly recreate what was going to be in the movie. But as far as the drawings I did for the licensing purposes, accuracy was the real key so that they looked exactly like the movie. Whereas doing the graphic novel was creating stuff afresh and being very creative, this was more the case of interpreting something that already existed. So it was rather more a commercial art job than a creative thing.

Q: How many scenes from the original graphic novel did you redraw in the new "movie" format?

DG: I kind of did them piecemeal, these licensing drawings. I did do a section of storyboarding for Zack Snyder. There is a part of the movie that isn’t in the graphic novel and he wanted to see how I would have drawn it, if it had been in the graphic novel. So I redid the storyboards as three pages of comic on the nine-panel grid, also getting it coloured by John Higgins so it looked authentic. But I think there were probably only 3 or 4 scenes that I drew, which were from the movie.

Q: What was your working method for producing these new illustrations from the film? And how has it changed from when you originally illustrated Watchmen?

DG: When you’re producing things from existing material, you have to look at and assemble the references... you know, keep looking backwards and forwards to make sure what you’re drawing is accurate to what’s in the photos. I did have lots of photos from the movie and in some cases I had more or less the illustration I was going to do in photo form, which made it a lot easier. On others I had to construct it from various references: really just the usual illustrator’s job of drawing something to reference. And on the original illustrations of Watchmen, I was free to come up with exactly the angles and exactly the costumes and everything that I wanted to. When you’ve designed a costume and drawn it a few times, you actually internalize it and you find you can draw it without having to refer to reference at all. So in some ways it’s more creative and in some ways it’s easier!

Q: In Watchmen: The Art of the Film, there are concept designs by other artists of their visions of your iconic characters. What do you think of their versions and did you offer any guidance while they were working on these?

DG: It’s always really interesting to see versions of your characters drawn by other artists. You tend to see things in them that you hadn’t noticed before. So I really enjoyed looking at those. I certainly didn’t offer them any guidance. The purpose of getting those kinds of drawings done is to get a fresh perspective on what exists. I noticed actually that they really stuck more closely to my original designs than those, but I really enjoyed seeing them.

Q: Watchmen: Portraits is Clay Enos’s stunning black and white collection of photos of each character from the Watchmen movie. What was it like looking through this book at all the characters you had conceived years ago now being brought to life by actors?

DG: It’s rather interesting; you know if you look at the Watching the Watchmen book you can see these characters as fairly sketchy rough conceptual versions. Then when you look at Clay’s book you can actually see them right down to counting the number of pores on the skin on the end of their noses! It’s incredible high focus! It’s like zooming in through space and time to look at the surface of some moon of Saturn or something. I thoroughly enjoyed his book... it had a real artistic quality to it that was really so good. And of course to see these actors who so much are the embodiment of what I drew, that it’s a tremendous thrill to see them made flesh!

Q: Watchmen: The Film Companion features some stills from the animated version of The Black Freighter. What do you think of the look and design of this animated feature?

DG: It looks really interesting! Although I drew my version in the comic book in a kind of horror-comic style, these are very much in a savage manga style. I think they work really well... they’ve got the kind of manic intensity, which I think that work should have and I really can’t wait to see the whole feature. I’ve seen the trailer for it and that looks great and again they’ve used a lot of the compositions that I came up with but just translated them to this kind of very modern drawn animation.

Q: How much time did you spend on the set of Watchmen? Was it a surreal experience to see your work recreated like this?

DG: I was on the set of Watchmen for a couple of days and it really was surreal to walk through a door and then suddenly be in the presence of all these people in living breathing flesh! I was there for what you would call the Crimebusters meeting where they were all there in costume in the same room, which was incredible. They had obviously planned that so I would get to see everyone. It was surreal though quite a wonderful experience to see it come to life.

It's a collectible book...but not much more
By Silly Goose
I don't feel the need to praise Alan Moore's and Dave Gibbon's "WATCHMEN" anymore than it has been praised already, and I do feel that a supplemental book to look back on the original material was a great idea, but for the most part "WATCHING THE WATCHMEN" just catalogues some of the original sketches and storyboard layouts. Without question, the quality of the printing is up to snuff, and the design of the book is flawless...the problem is there just isn't much content. The book would do better if there was more writing and reflection on the part of Gibbons (and Moore, of course), because most readers are probably more curious as to the ideas and sensibility that helped shape the original "WATCHMEN." There is not much in that department - of course one can just as easily look all of that up on Wikipedia at this point.

But overall I have no regrets in buying this book. It is a nice collector's item for those who have an affinity for the original "WATCHMEN" - just don't expect it to be much more than that.

A Wonderful Glimpse into the Process
By Robert Greenberger
Never before had I seen that much thought and effort go into a project. It was January 1985 and I was representing DC Comics to the British talent. Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and I spent a delightful afternoon reviewing the project and Dave showed me sketches for the characters, the covers and even a marketing campaign that was as sophisticated as it was smart. It's a terrific that so much of this material was saved and is finally seeing the light of day, so Dave's wonderful efforts can be celebrated. The book is a visual treat and a terrific companion to the graphic novel.

Great book, but....
By K. Stone
HARD TO READ. My eyes were bleeding by the end of it. Purple and green type on black backgrounds does not a pleasurable reading experience make. I was surprised at how badly the content other than the phenomenal artwork was presented...THAT is my ONLY grip and what keeps it from being a five star book. If it were not for the content in fact it would be a 2.3 star book, but Sigh...Yes it does have that content, which is AMAZING. The fact that Dave Gibbons has saved some of these amazing artifacts of what now is a cultural touchstone and will be even MORE so when the movie come out, its pretty special.

Some highlights.

1. The sketches, which show HOW Dave and Alan came about creating the characters.

2. Actual inkblots used to inspire Rorshach

3. Copies of the actual typewritten on onion-skin manuscript from Alan Moore.

This book is like I said AMAZING, But it doesn't tell the whole story, just part of it, maybe because some was told in the Absolute Watchmen edition published a few years back. This is a companion book that is a must have for either of those editions. If you have Absolute Watchmen, get this book. If you have this book only, go out and get Absolute Watchmen.

I know I will find myself looking at this book as I do the other editions of the Watchmen I have.

Watchmen is and will be the Citizen Kane of comic books.

CPA Marketing $100 Per Day: Guaranteed $100 Per Day Minimum

First off CPA stands for Cost Per Action referring to a type of marketing where you generate leads for a business and they give you some of that cold hard stuff when you generate a lead for the business.
This way of making a dollar has been around for a long time now and has become very popular as lots of internet marketers saw the opportunities that it created to make a profit.
The fact you don't actually have to sell anything to get paid is of great attraction as it is a lot of fun and you make money to boot.
So it works like this you generate traffic (leads) from one or several places which you send to an offer. That offer is usually for some freebie, free trial or some such thing that the lead needs to fill in a questionnaire, sign up for a newsletter or in most cases just give their email address in order to receive their gift. When they do that you get paid. Yeah about time
Okay how much do you get paid – well it varies from around $1 up to $30 or $40, but before you get too excited those high payouts are very competitive and the lead needs to jump through lots of hoops before you get to see any money.
So we'll be sticking to the low hanging fruit where we know there is plenty of easy pickings.

Content was fair.

The content was fairly informative. The grammar and errors made it difficult to understand at times. I'm glad pay $9.99 a month for Amazon unlimited reader. If don't like a book. I just trade it for another. I hoped that helped. Want to Be Blessed? Read Malichi 3:10
