Universe twisting technology and threats abound
By Mike Nemeth
Vaughn Heppner in "The Lost Patrol" continues to move the saga of Captain Maddox into new directions, introducing new characters and enemies. As if our captain didn't have enough trouble already. The fifth volume of the Lost Starship Series begins with Maddox making a free fall into space just for kicks. But this is Maddox, a guy who's half New Man and has saved the earth from certain annihilation. Immediately he's set upon by two separate assassination teams and meets up with the Spacers, a secretive and highly technically capable group rumored to have ties to the mysterious Builders. He meets an old woman Spacer, the Visionary, and she dubs him the "di-far," which means something like a playmaker in the universe. Maddox then takes on Shu 15, a Spacer he rescues. She's very thankful for her life and seems devoted, at first. But like all Heppner stories, there's more going on in the background. Allies can turn, and Shu 15 once tried to kill him in a past book in the series. This time Maddox sets out on probably his least favorite assignment with the ancient alien-built ship and its AI Galyan. He must find the dreaded Swarm Imperium. Maddox brings the professor, who hates Shu. Heppner creates all sorts of conflict, and it appears many times that this may be the final voyage of Maddox and crew. The threats and challenges pose a tremendous barrier to the mission's success, and the androids, who tried to kill Maddox early on in this volume, remain a threat. Maddox and company get little aid. What I enjoy most is how this motley crew pull a semblance of success from near impossible odds, and Heppner puts his imagination into overdrive to make Maddox's journey one hell of a ride.

too many derivative concepts, offset by very good writing and decent character development
By Robert Shuler
One star removed for doubling down on the insectoid theme (there are two of them now), and punting on the Builders. There is some development of the hero, though he becomes too cocky, and there might be a hint of development in Luddendorf. Or maybe not. We'll see. That would be interesting. Also a hint of development among the robots, however this much is very Asimovian and therefore derivative, with two factions of robots, one sometimes "helping" humans but remaining secret, etc. However, the other faction is non-Asimovian (neither explained nor very interesting, either). Some loose ends as the fate of the kidnapped engineer in the prologue is never revealed. And the fate of the Builders is right out of StarGate SG-1. The writing, however, is as good as the first in the series, very entertaining, so I gave it a positive rating.

A Must Read Story: Great Action, Deeper Lore, and a good dose of humor :)
By John R. Heritage Jr.
Five stars for me. The writing continues to improve; This 5th book in the series has a great balance of humor mixed in with serious story and action. There is continued character building of a few of the main characters, with substantial insertions of other important actors. The best part is a significant broadening of scope and lore for the Lost Starship Series universe. I tend to 'savor' books over time but this 5th installment I could not put down*.

This is a great book in a great series; Let's hope Vaughn Heppner is a Methuselah man so this can continue for a while :).

* For reference and comparison, (months later) I am still struggling to get started with the 4th book in the Expanse series.

Review

“This is an excellent book, and I thoroughly recommend it to those listed in my opening remarks.”  (Chromatographia, 1 December 2015)

“All in all, this is an admirable and helpful book that has assembled a great deal of useful information in a usable and systematically presented form.”  (British Toxicology Society, 1 July 2013)

"Dr. Barceloux has once again produced an encyclopedic reference book in medical toxicology. This text should be place alongside Dr. Barceloux’s previous volume on natural toxins and found in every poison control center, reference library, and the personal library of every medical toxicologist. Drug enforcement agencies, forensic toxicologists, and pharmacologists would benefit from the use of this work also. I highly recommended it as the premier work on the topic." (Edward J. Otten, The Journal of Emergency Medicine, April 2013)

“This is an excellent reference work that will be of great interest to all who specialize in abused substances, whether they be analytical chemists, poison information specialists or treatment providers.  It deserves to be one of the very first sources consulted when assessing a human exposure to a recreational drug or chemical.”  (International Association of Forensic Toxicologists, 1 February 2013)

“Medical Toxicology of Drug Abuseis a comprehensive, well researched, solidly founded treatise on all aspects of synthesized drugs of abuse and psychoactive plants.”  (Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1 March 2013)

“It is the nature of text-books that they cannot catch all of the last-minute findings. Medical Toxicology of Drug Abuse includes so much that one must congratulate the accomplishment.”  (Journal of Analytical Toxicology, 4 December  2012)

“Aa a member of ACMT, I am constantly amazed at the talent in our organisation.  Dr. Barceloux demonstrates his depth of knowledge and excellent writing skills in these recently published textbooks.  Both books are an excellent resources for medical toxicologists.”  (American College of Medical Toxicology, 1 December  2012)

“Despite this potential omission, Dr. Barceloux must be commended for this tremendous effort. It is rare to have an authoritative encyclopedia of information be predominately written by one person, clearly a labor of love. Without question, this book is a “must have” reference for anyone involved with drugs of abuse.”  (Journal of Forensic Sciences, 1 November 2012)

A must for clinical toxicologists, medical review officers, poison information centers and all health care practitioners who deal
By E. P. Krenzelok
In the Foreword to Medical Toxicology of Drug Abuse, Professor Allister Vale, an internationally renowned clinical toxicologist, recommended this as an "excellent book". I concur with his recommendation wholeheartedly! In this, the second of his series of four books on various clinical toxicology topics, Dr. Donald Barceloux continued what he accomplished in the first book of the current series--to produce a comprehensive, expert, concisely written, evidence-based book that transcends the interdisciplinary ranks and bridges the gap between clinical expertise and toxicology information. The title of the book understates the scope of this contribution, implying that it is about substances abuse with psychoactive properties. However, it also addresses issues that are associated with drugs and substances that are abused for physiological purposes. For example, there are excellent chapters that are dedicated to performance enhancing substances such as anabolic steroids, blood doping agents, growth hormone, as well as agents that are implicated in eating disorders. Each chapter follows a template with well-defined headings that are consistent from chapter to chapter. For history buffs, each chapter begins with an historical perspective on the evolution of the drug's development and eventual misuse. There is an extensive discussion of the toxicokinetics of each drug. For those who need more extensive information on forensic issues such as diagnostic information or the interpretation of post mortem concentrations of biological samples, they will find this to be an excellent resource. For example, the chapters on ethanol and marijuana are nearly as comprehensive as many texts on those topics. The book is an excellent resource for experts who consult with industry or in matters of litigation. The chapters are referenced extensively, including 417 references in the amphetamine/methamphetamine chapter to 657 references in the ethanol chapter. As hoped for, everything from the traditional substances of abuse to contemporary substances such as the synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists are included. None of the chapters are what I refer to as 'cameo' chapters which may be included for the sake of completeness but without clinical or academic substance. This is an excellent reference resource for general practitioners of every health care discipline who need the convenience of a comprehensive desktop reference and a must for those who practice clinical toxicology and poison/drug information dissemination on a daily basis.

GRAVITY The Source of Earth's Water, by Lawrence St. Clair Myers

Readers who believe the Earth was formed ~4.6 billion years ago will learn it is still very young. It originated billions of years ago when a meteoroid captured by the Sun grew larger by attracting smaller meteoroids and meteordust during orbits around the Sun. This process increases the planet's mass and size every day, and scientists must determine this growth rate to estimate how much longer Mankind will be able to live on this still-young planet. Readers will learn that gravitational force melts Earth's core, producing heat and water that controls global weather patterns. This process is unstoppable and will continue to raise sea levels and increase Earth's heat levels at a rate that may be accelerating. Man's ingenuity adds to weather problems, but the basic process is controlled by Nature. For centuries geophysicists believed the Earth was formed in its present size and spherical shape ~4.6 billion years ago, an error disproved by structural maps of the mountains and ocean floors. There were no oceans ~250 million years ago, but gravitational pressure on the core produced all existing water and ocean basins that now cover 71% of the planet. These ocean basins grow by volcanic mid-ocean ridges that force continents apart and increase the size and holding capacity of the ocean basins, but constant addition of new water raises ocean levels that threaten islands and coastal areas. This process is augmented by organic growth photosynthesized from the Sun that is converted to ordinary dirt, coal, petroleum and fossilized trees. Today's 360-degree GPS system is outdated by this constant global expansion, and the so-called subduction of soft ocean seafloor beneath solid continents to maintain a fixed Earth diameter is physically impossible and one of science's greatest errors. These facts were not fully understood until 2014, 50 years after the author perceived the idea of planetary growth and expansion and attempted to prove to the scientific world the Earth was not formed in its present size about 4.6 billion years ago, but has grown continuously by accreting mass from meteorites, dust, and solar energy during its orbits of the Sun.

Love doing this for my daily oracle readings.
By Lani702
So I bought my first set of this at a used bookstore and was drawn to it. I used it for my friend and she fell in love with this, so I decided to get her a set off of Amazon and have it sent to her. She is a faithful user of these oracle Lenormand based cards and we both use it faithfully. In fact she turned her cousin onto this as well so now she's also a lover of these oracle cards as well.

I like the cards
By Im Scarlet
So far pretty good. I've only done 7 and 9 card spreads but it seems to pick up what's going on with me. I read for a friend and she felt the reading was accurate. Kind of easy once you get the hang of it. A friend who is a professional tarot reader recently ordered it and she's going to use it with her clients in the future.

Update: Over 10 years later- the interpretations that come with the cards are not the best. For better clarity go to faerygodmother.com or cafelenormand.com. They have much better and more accurate translations. I wondered for years why a lot of stuff didnt happen or why stuff happened that I hadn't foreseen in the cards or what to make of certain card combos that didnt make sense if you only use this book's interpretation. Now I know that a clover doesn't always mean the best. It can be mitigated. Buy this set of cards but use the two aforementioned websites to get the ultimate benefits. They weren't around 10 yrs ago.

Titania's Fortune Cards Review
By Tanya C. Wright
Hi There Everybody! I Ordered My Titania's Fortune Cards 1 October And I Received Them 6 October, A Day Earlier Than My Estimated Date of Delivery. Thus, The Shipping Was EXCELLENT... Good & Fast! I Ordered These Cards Knowing That I Bought Them With The Condition of Used (Like New). So I Didn't Expect My Cards To Arrive In Top Condition. When I Received My Cards, To My Surprise, The Whole Entire Set (Book & Cards) Wasn't Wrapped. The Whole Set Was In Tact Though I Felt The Set Might've Been Missing An Outer Wrapping. This Whole Set Is Esquisite!

The Book Cover Is Gold With Gold Letters, Very Impressive! Never Seen A Book Like It! It's Very Attractive To Look At. Next, It Opens Like A Book But What's Real Neat Is That There's A Special Slot Made For The Card Deck To Fit Into. The Box That Holds The Cards Has A Sample Card Glued To It And It's In The Design of The Whole 36-Card Deck. Ha Ha, How Did They Fit All Those 36 Pictures On One Single Card?! So Next, We Move To The Right Side of The Set. I Was A Little Disappointed That The Book Is Glued To The Right Side of The Set. I Was Really Hoping The Book Would Slide Out. It's Kind of A Pain Trying To Read Just The Book When It's Attached To The Set, Kinda Klunky. There's A Page Dedicated To Each Picture And A Page To Each Definition of The Card.

Next, The Book Gives Samples of A Main Reading, (The Big Daddy of A Reading(lol) 7 And 9 Card Sample Readings And They Even Break Down How To Read The Cards In Rows, Then Columns Then Diagonals. While The Card Meanings Are Easy To Remember, Remembering The Combinations of The Cards Is Difficult. Yet I Love The Lenormand Cards Because I Find Them To Be Quite Accurate, Even More So Than The Tarot (I'm A Tarologist). I've Been Reading The Tarot For 22 Years Now And When I Compare Titania's Fortune Cards To A Tarot Deck, The Difference Is Titania's Fortune Cards Is A Deck of Only *36* Cards As Opposed To The 78-card Tarot Deck. The Pictures of The Lenormand Deck Are Easy To Connect To Their Meanings Since The Card Is What It Is, The Picture You See Is Pretty Much The Definition (Example: Heart=Love, 4-leaf Clover=Luck, Letter=News, Etc.).

Moving Right Along Here, I Took The Cards Out of The Box They Came In And They Were Wrapped In Plastic To My Enormous Satisfaction, I Worried That Someone Might Have Already Used Them Since They Came In The Condition of Used (Like New). I Would've Had To Return Them If They Were Used Because Cards Have To Be Kept From Other People's Vibrations. So With This, I Took The Plastic Off The Cards And Began To Look At All The 36 Pictures In The Deck. I Find The Deck To Be Absolutely Stunning! The Pictures Speak In Colorful Volumes. There's Every Color of The Rainbow In The Deck, My Personal Favorite Is Blue And So The 26th Card, The Book, Is One of My Favorite Cards In This Deck. All The Cards Are Very Attractive And They All Scream For Your Attention Since The Colors Are Just That Bright.

However, I Feel The Cards Compared To A Tarot Deck, Are On The Thin Side. But As Long As You're Not Going To Shuffle Them By Riffling, You'll Be Ok. Also, The Cards Are Not Like Tarot Cards In The Sense That They're Not As Slippery As A New Tarot Deck. The Cards Tend To Cling To One Another But This Deck Is Wonderful And I Would *HIGHLY* Recommend Them To Anyone Looking For A Lenormand Deck. I Also Recommend The Piatnik Version of The Lenormand, That's A Very Beautiful Deck That I Have As Well. Personally, I Feel That There Are Three Must-Have Decks of The Lenormand, If You're Going To Be Reading The Lenormand Cards. They Are: Titania's Fortune Cards, The *Piatnik Version And The Magisches Lenormand* The Last Two, I Feel Are The Most Attractive of All The Lenormand Decks I've Ever Seen.

To Summarize, If You're Thinking of Buying Titania's Fortune Cards, Don't Hesitate! You Won't Regret Buying This Deck!!!

Review

“International economics teaching at the undergraduate and master’s level generally sequences trade theory, trade policy, exchange rate determination and balance of payments, and international monetary adjustment under alternative exchange rate regimes – more or less in that order – with applications to countries, regional arrangements, and institutions brought into the discussion throughout. This clearly written volume focuses on the first two dimensions of international economics in the real-sector context. In chapter 1, Smith (Univ. of Minnesota) covers traditional Ricardian and factor-endowment-based trade models; she develops partial and general trade equilibria in chapter 2 and intra-industry and intra-firm trade in chapter 3. This discussion is thoroughly up-to-date and highlights the gap in conceptual elegance between inter-industry and intra-industry trade models. In part 2, Smith applies partial and general equilibrium constructs to trade policy, starting with tariffs and proceeding to subsidies and quotas and other quantitative restrictions, then compares the welfare consequences of alternative trade interventions. The book’s real value comes in part 4 on the trade consequences of all kinds of domestic policies whose consequences (and often intent) include distorting trade. This covers a “dog’s breakfast” of measures often hard to sort out (e.g., policies on labor standards, the environment, human rights). Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduate and graduate students.”

Review

"Unique for its strong focus on important policy questions in international trade and development economics. It provides comprehensive analysis of issues that generally do not appear in an introductory international economics text, including trade policy equivalence, intellectual property rights, and international trade and its impacts on labor markets and the environment."
—Keith E. Maskus, University of Colorado at Boulder

"This is an excellent and comprehensive treatment of the theory of international trade, trade policies, and institutional issues."
Robert M. Stern, Goldman School, University of California Berkeley

"Strong and subtle symmetry is a very attractive strength of this insightful treatment of modern policy interventions in globalized markets. Its structure is assiduously integrative, almost poetic in its analytics. Its applied questions encourage readers into the adventure of seasoned policy evaluation. It is a mature mentor - more-than-primer - for both activists and analysts, who need to go beyond the elementary anatomy of policy prescription for a global economy."
—J. David Richardson, Syracuse University and Peterson Institute for International Economics

"Pamela Smith fills a long-standing gap for students and policymakers wanting to understand contemporary trade issues like services, labor, and intellectual property rights, while remaining grounded in rigorous economics."
—Michael J. Ferrantino, World Bank

From the Back Cover

In Global Trade Policy, economist Pamela J. Smith explores the key questions raised about global trade and policy today—and the answers that emerge from economic research. During the past two decades, the character of global trade and policy has changed in unprecedented ways. Attention has turned from traditional trade policies—such as tariffs, quantitative restrictions, and export subsidies—to trade related policies including intellectual property rights, labor policies, environmental policies, and growth and development policies. The institutional arrangements for these policies continue to evolve with substantial international debate. Offering accessible coverage for students of economics, business, public policy, and applied economics, this book provides an economic framework for understanding the current policy debates in global trade. Readers are first given background knowledge of trade theory to help guide discussions of trade policy, including traditional theories of inter industry trade, as well as newer theories of intra industry and intra firm trade. They then examine the national and global effects of widely used policies designed to directly affect trade, the indirect impacts of newer trade related policies, and the institutional arrangements for these policies. The distinctive question based format provides an accessible structure for students to grasp the key issues in this field, and the inclusion of reading lists and applied exercises enable them to explore open ended and realistic questions of policy debate.

High level theoretical - impeccable source.
By James
I chose this book for my MBA course. I used it as a supplemental book for a section of the course on "theories, institutions and practices of global trade." The book is well written, and it presents a solid theoretical and conceptual base for understanding global trade. It examines actual global trade practices and uses sound theoretical means to develop an understanding of their bases and effects.

The book would be useful for an economics course in global trade, but it is too "theoretical" for use as a primary book in an MBA course. At the same time, it may be just a little elementary for an advanced course in international trade economics.

As a resource, it is great. Its explanations are carefully presented, accurate and impeccably detailed. If used as a source from which to build lectures (which is what I used it for), it can be used with confidence. It has been written by a superb scholar for use by other scholars.

The tables and illustrations were clear and had excellent writing regarding them in order to make them clear
By Stephen Drill
I was a student in this course and used this textbook. I thought the book was very well written, concise while still providing an inclusive summary at the end of each chapter. The tables and illustrations were clear and had excellent writing regarding them in order to make them clear. This book provided me with the economic framework for understanding global trade policy and has helped me understand some of the current policy debates.

The Cavalry of the Roman Republic, by Jeremiah B. McCall

In this original and revealing work, Jeremiah B. McCall challenges the generally accepted view of the Roman cavalry and explores the fundamental connections between war and society in republican Rome, c.300-100 BC.
McCall describes the citizen cavalry's equipment, tactics, and motivation in battle, and argues for its effectiveness in the field. This success is proof that it cannot finally have been disbanded for purely military reasons; he shows that victories in the law-courts, and lavish displays of wealth, came to supersede cavalry service as a way of building the reputations of the Roman elite.
The clear structure and fresh approach of the book, combining insights from both Roman military and social history, will be useful to readers at all levels of study.

First rate text on a little known subject
By Ben Kane
As many people know, information on the citizen cavalry of the mid Roman Republic is hard to come by. Ancient history, with its patchy details, is wide open to interpretation of one kind or another. Sometimes these interpretations become the accepted 'way things were', even if there's no real proof to back up the conclusions are made.

A case in point is the subject of this little volume, by Jeremiah McCall. Citizen cavalry, the Republic's staple mounted force from the fifth century BC until the first, had disappeared by the time of Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus. Until this excellent text came along, the widely held belief was that Roman citizen cavalry had become inferior to the enemies it faced, and was therefore dispensed with.

As McCall cogently argues, there is no hard proof for this at all, and in fact, the evidence points to the Roman citizen cavalry being, for the most part, just as good as the enemies they faced. When they weren't - for example in the Second Punic War - changes were made. (This is when McCall moots that the much debated change of equipment and weaponry took place.) The theory he comes up with for the demise of the citizen cavalry is also sensible: that by the first century BC, the route to success, fame and fortune for young equestrians no longer began with service in the cavalry, but in the political world.

Just seven chapters long, this text is well-written and presented. There is an exhaustive set of notes at the back mentioning all its classical sources. With its well-made challenge to another common assumption about Rome, it's a 'must read' for anyone interested in the Roman Republic's armies. And the good news is that a paperback edition is scheduled for March 2011. Bringing the price down significantly will definitely make it worth purchasing.

Ben Kane, author of The Forgotten Legion.

Good, although not entirely convincing
By JPS
This is a short book - 150 pages of text, annexes included - but nevertheless a valuable one on the cavalry of the Roman Republic between 300 and 100 BC. Essentially, the author seeks to make three main points.

The first is that, contrary to an assumption initially surfaced by historians but never really demonstrated, Roman citizen and Italian allied cavalry were not inefficient. The second is that it was even able to adapt and evolve in order to keep being efficient and that its efficiency was largely due to its aggressive tactics based on Roman war ethos. The third is that the disappearance of Roman and Italian cavalry therefore did not happen because it was efficient but for other reasons that the author believes to have identified and following a period of particular stress on Roman manpower.

The main value of this little book is that the author has mustered sufficient elements on each of the points and conducted his investigation in such a way that he makes an intriguing, and often a very good case. A related item is that the author is however honest enough to recognise in a number of instances that the points he makes are often not backed by evidence simply because there isn't any. Even when the points seem very plausible or very likely, there are therefore interpretations or even speculations if you happen to dislike or disagree with them. What is interesting, however, is that there may be no less "speculative" than the statements which have become "conventional wisdom" and according to which Roman cavalry under the Republic was of poor quality because the Romans were no horsemen and that this is why Rome replaced Roman and Italian cavalry by auxiliaries drawn from conquered people such as the Spaniards, Gauls, Thracians or Batavians, to mention only those.

As the author demonstrates rather convincingly, the poor reputation earned by the Roman cavalry goes back to the Second Punic War where they were comprehensively defeated as the Tessin, at the battle of Trebia and then at Cannae. They also lost another cavalry engagement against the Macedonians but won just as comprehensively their cavalry battles at Zama and at Magnesia. This is where I had a bit of a problem with the author's views. While it is easy to agree with him that the defeats against Hannibal may have occurred partly because the Carthaginians were better lead and outnumbered the Roman and allied cavalry, this was not necessarily the case against the Macedonians. Moreover, and in all fairness, the Carthaginian cavalry was also heavily outnumbered at Zama, a point that Jeremiah McCall fails to make. As for the battle of Magnesia, the Romans did get the better of the Seleukid cavalry opposing them, but their numbers included some 700 Hellenistic heavy cavalry from Pergamon (out of 3000). Moreover, they were commanded by King Eumene and they won against an enemy cavalry that was already disordered. Again, none of the points are made by the author. Accordingly, the author is certainly correct in stating that the Roman cavalry may not have been as ineffective as some have made it out to be. However, neither was its track record as excellent as he may want to convince us.

One last comment here is that part of the discussion related to numbers is simply missing from the book. Simply put, one reason for the Romans to increasingly use non-Roman and then non-Italian cavalry is simply that they did not have enough of their own, regardless of whether it was as efficient as that of their opponents or not. This can be seen in the organisation of the legions of the Republic, with the Romans only Fielding 300 citizen cavalry per legion while requiring their Italian allies to field twice or three times more than them. Even that, however, was not necessarily enough, with Scipio making use of allied Numidians at Zama and Roman generals having use of Hellenistic allied cavalry in Greece and Asia Minor during the second century.

The second point made by the author is about the Roman and Italian cavalry's ability to adapt and, more precisely, to become armoured cavalry after Cannae while still preserving its aggressive tactics of fighting hand-to-hand.

Here, the author essentially assumes that Roman and Italian cavalry were essentially unarmoured at least up to the battle of Cannae included (that is up to 216 BC) and that as a result of "lessons learnt" from this defeat against their Carthaginian opponents, they adopted body armour. This is where the author's assumptions become rather unconvincing. As the author shows very well, both Roman and Italian cavalrymen belonged to the elites of their respective cities, as had been the case throughout Antiquity in many other civilisations, if only because having a horse was expensive and therefore limited to those who could afford it. A similar comment can be made about body armour. It was also costly and also reserved under the Middle Republic to those who could afford it. To try to justify and explain why Roman and Latin cavalry would lack body armour while their Greek, Macedonian and Carthaginian opponents did not, the author is then obliged to come with rather unconvincing explanations about their special tactics of often fighting dismounted, and the handicap that metallic body armour would represent in doing so. There are, however, three and perhaps even four issues which the author fails to discuss or even mention.

First, while Roman and Latin cavalry may have avoided wearing metallic armour which could be burdensome and cramp their ability to mount and dismount during hand to hand engagements, especially against other cavalry, this does not necessarily imply that they were not wearing any body armour. They may very well have had leather or linen cuirasses, for instance. They certainly had the means to equip themselves with them and their status, on which the author insists so much, would also probably ensure that they were as best equipped as they could.

Second, the whole case for Roman and allied cavalry's ability and willingness to fight on horseback and to dismount and fight on foot is also unconvincingly argued. While there may have been cases where this happened during skirmishes, the sources do not really help to identify them. Contrary to the author's statement, it is not certain that this occurred at Cannae, for instance. Moreover, and contrary to what the author claims, the advantages that could be obtained by dismounting part of one's light cavalry to fight against enemy cavalry in an open melee are not as one sided as they are made to be. The risks, which are not mentioned, were simply to be knocked down by the enemy horses, or even trampled if these were trained to do so or unable to avoid the obstacle.

A third issue is the impression that the author, in his eagerness to make his point, comes up with a somewhat artificial and simplistic divide between Roman and Italian cavalry, who are presented as willing or even eager for hand-to-hand fighting, and their enemies who almost seem to have preferred javelin throwing and fighting. The points about Roman "heroic" fighting, and the benefits associated with outstanding bravery are well made. The very positive effects that this could have for young bluebloods' reputations and future political careers are clear and, in the case of rare very well made. One cannot help wonder, however, to what extent this was not also the case for Greek citizen cavalry or Gallic nobles. Neither seems to have been exactly timid or particularly reluctant to fight their enemies up close.

A fourth point where there is some uncertainty concerns Roman and Italian cavalry's arms, equipment and tactics before and after the alleged reform. From a somewhat obscure passage in one of the surviving sources, the author concludes that this equipment, in particular the smallish and flimsy shield and a rather weak spear, were of poor quality and therefore replaced. Rather than depicting such equipment as inadequate per se, as the author does, its replacement could simply illustrate the shift from light to heavier cavalry.

Finally, there is the author's third contention. He quite plausibly identifies the disappearance of Roman and Allied cavalry and their replacement by (non-Italian) auxiliaries with the Social War and the huge constraints this placed on the Romans. He also explains in a very interesting and convincing way why this emergency measure was never reversed by showing that, by the first century BC, Roman and Italian elites no longer needed to display "heroic" deeds in order to get noticed. Good rhetoric as a lawyer, patronage together with pots of money, were enough to get elected.

This part and the one describing the traditional warlike ethos of the Roman and Italian aristocracies are perhaps the most convincing of the book. The others, even if less so, were nevertheless thought provoking and interesting, even when speculative. Four stars.

The story of the last prime minister of Rhodesia.
By Elisabeth Tromm
A very good book with an insight of the live of Ian Douglas Smith.
His dry sense of humour, his early life in Seluwke,a small mining town in Rhodesia.
His life as a farmer and his family, Janet and his 2 adopted children and their own son.
The book reads like someone tells a story and difficult to put down.
I met Ian Smith and the author Phillippa Berlyn.
Both interesting people.
