Foundational for discussing what matters most

There were 3 aspects of this book that made a differecne for me: Thinking Differently, Making Shifts, and understanding the Structure found in all difficult conversations. If you understand these aspects it will significantly improve how well you handle difficult conversations.
This is about Thinking Differently-- 1. This is an approach. 2. It's not about doing differently; it's about thinking differently. 3. It's about shifting from a message delivery stance to a learning stance. 4. All difficult conversations have the same structure. The structure is almost always "below the surface." It is hidden in what people are thinking and feeling, but not saying.
Shifts (with this approach)-- We must shift our internal orientation: FROM: Certainty (I understand) TO: Curiosity (Help me understand); FROM: I am right TO: I am curious; FROM: I know what was intended TO:I know the impact; FROM: I know who is to blame TO: I know who contributed what; FROM: Debate TO: Exploration; FROM: Simplicity TO: Complexity; FROM: "Either/or" TO: "And".
Understanding the Structure-- 1. All difficult conversations share a common structure. To make the structure visible, we not only need to understand what was said, but also what was not said. We need to understand what the people involved are thinking and feeling, but not saying to each other. This is usually where the real action is. 2. What makes a conversation difficult? The gap between what you are really thinking and what you are saying is part of it. 3. Our thoughts and feelings of all difficult conversations fall into the same three categories, or "conversations". 4. And, in each of the conversations, we make predictable errors that distort our thoughts and feelings and get us in trouble. 5. There predictable errors can be overcome this specific strategies that the authors suggest.
I have developed workshops based on this material that we are finding very helpful in our hospital setting.

Very Informative and helpful

Everyone of us has gone through difficult conversations, arguments that were leading no where or felt that we were unjustifiably being taken advantage of. The solution - read this book. The authors have done a remarkable work in presenting conversations (real examples) that we can relate to. They educate the reader with the pitfalls and means o avoid them.
In difficult conversations the participants generally fall trap to the three common crippling assumptions which are:
1. The Truth assumption : I am right you are wrong
2. The Intention Invention : When the other persons intentions are unclear a common perception is
that they are bad
3. The Blame Frame : Blame the other produces disagreement, denial and little learning
The authors map a path by showing how to avoid the pitfalls when facing a difficult conversation and come out as a winner. In our life we prepare for almost every thing, like schooling and college for career etc. it is somewhat surprising that conversations that truly are a means to progress we spend little time on; this is one of the books in this area. I highly recommend that you read it.

No matter who we are, we all have difficult conversations too often, that don't go as well as we would like.

A book on CD called to me when I saw its captivating title: DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS: HOW TO DISUCSS WHAT MATTERS MOST--written and read by Douglas Stone, Bruce Patton and Sheila Heen.

The fact that Patton was one of the authors also caught my attention, in that he was the coauthor of one of my favorite books on negotiations, GETTING TO YES!

This effort covers such topics as dealing with your ex-husband who can't seem to show up reliably for weekends with the kinds navigating a workplace fraught with office politics or racial tensions, and saying "I'm sorry" or "I love you." No matter who we are, we've all had to have similar conversations and too often, they don't go as well as we would like.

DIFFICULT CONVERSATONS at least makes them easier by providing such useful advice as the following:

* Use "and" to help you become clearer; e.g.,, "I understand what you're saying, and I feel this way."

* Put things on the table without judgments.

* Saying "I feel" will cause the other person to be less likely to argue with you.

* Postponing a conversation can sometimes be helpful.

* Sometimes, actions are better than conversations; e.g., going to a mother's home rather than always being asked, "When are you going to come home?"

* People are more likely to change when they don't have to.

* If you don't have a question, don't ask one; e.g., "Are you going to clean the refrigerator?" vs. "Please clean the refrigerator."

And this one final tidbit, which I have personally found very useful: Be careful when making judgments. It is easy to say, "Spanking is wrong," but a better way to say this might well be, "I believe spanking is wrong."

Bad little children are Tasty!

I should probably be embarrassed to say this, but here goes. I have never read a graphic novel. I know. Loser, right? But it is something that simply never really interested me. Oh, I read comics when I was a kid. I remember walking to the market when II was able to pull enough pennies together for a comic or two, and I cherished them. But I never really came across a graphic novel whose concept interested me.

When I was offered “Hopcross Jilly” for a review, it was a perfect opportunity to check out the genre and see what I thought with an author whose work I know I like. The fact that it also features Jesse, daughter to Adam Hauptman and step-daughter to Mercy Thompson, was a plus.

I must say, my personal feelings are mixed. That is the problem with building a picture of an authors characters up in your mind over time. If the picture you see, whether on screen or in print is different from what you expect, it can be disappointing. Adam didn’t look anything like I pictured him, though Jesse was a good fit. Mercy? Not so much.

Now the story, I liked that. Jesse has a really hard time in high school. Well, when your father is the Alpha of the local Pack, and the face of werewolves all over, kids can be vicious. Since kids can be more vicious than a school of rabid piranha anyway, add in the fact that your dad is Top Were and your life can be utterly miserable. That only gets worse when the pack finds the bodies of four children - then four more, then four more, and four more - buried ritualistically on an abandoned farm. And when one of the bodies happens to be the aunt of the Queen Mean Girl in school, things get even worse.

I can’t say the graphic novel format was my favorite way to read the story – but that is personal preference, and has nothing to do with whether it was well done or not – because it really was well done. Anything from Patricia Briggs I can pretty much expect to be exceptional, and the art and storyline are just that. Simply a matter of taste, but if you like graphic novels, I will highly recommend this. I believe she also has other graphic novels out – give them a look if you are a graphic novel buff.

Hansel & Gretel it is a good thing you never met Hopcross Jilly!

WHAT I THINK ABOUT THIS BOOK:

FIRST, let's address the formal components of the book.

The cover image (the first image, located at the top left of this post), as you can see, is vibrant, even while the artist, Tom Garcia and colorist, Mohan, chose to set the mood with somber colors. Given that there is a giant reaching over the house, the image should convey an image of horror and forbidding. Looking, however, at Mercy in her fighting stance with one fist clenched and leaning forward to meet the evil head on, it seems to evoke more a feeling of "Let's dance!" than of unapproachability. The light over part of the scene shows hope. So, I think the cover is outstanding in that it leads us to want to know more, and not be afraid to open the book and turn the pages.

Inside, where dark forces are at play, somber blues, grays, blacks, punctuated with brick reds and reds to warm the image, a bit--just like the cover. The pages dealing with the high school are full of light, colors, and openness. So, Garcia and Mohan did very well with the use of color is setting the scenes and atmosphere. Additionally, the images are just beautiful. To say that I like the graphic images would be an understatement.

SECOND: Audience: In the early days of comics, the "funnies" were for children, fairly exclusively. Since the growth and popularity of the graphic novel, the line is much harder to draw. (no pun intended). Graphic novels made comics acceptable. They also went from "episodic" publications to full novels with a beginning, middle, and end--told in pictures. So, then given those brief considerations of audience, just who is the audience for Hopcross Jilly? At first blush, most would think it a YA (young adult) novel. This could be true, especially with Jesse as a high schooler who takes center stage in the story.

But, then we have some really gruesome scenes like the finding of children's bodies on the property in question, and the apparent mass murder of children. And then, in a scene much like Edgar Allen Poe's, Tell Tale Heart, parts of the deceased children were buried under the floorboards--here, finger bones and toe bones were buried like that. In the book, the fae tell the story about one who ate the fingers and toes of bad children.

So, the sheer gruesomeness of some of the scenes do not seem appropriate for children. But then, again, modernly, many children from middle schools go to see violent movies and read other books focusing on violence; and what child hasn't heard a violent fairy tale [e.g. the witch who ate children in Hansel and Gretel.]?

THIRD: The Story: I mentioned, above, that the story has a beginning, middle, and end; moreover, given the size of the book, it is large enough to be a graphic novel. But, note, just because it has a complete story arc and is large enough to be a book, doesn't mean it is a graphic novel. Two things are at play, here:
First, it was the intention of Patricia Briggs and Dynamite Entertainment to create this book as a "comic," exclusively. [4]
Second, the book was originally published in episodes, just like a comic book and later (i.e., now) those episodes have been assembled into the complete story under one cover. These two things are dispositive to the issue of whether or not the book is a comic or a graphic novel.[4]

Next, let's take a look at Jesse's part in this gruesome story. In the series most of the main characters get to be center stage for a while--along with Mercy--to have their story told. Like many of the books in the series, Jesse gets to have her story told (well, at least part of it). While the story starts out with Mercedes (Mercy), Jesse soon takes center stage in the story.

As I mentioned, above, one of the things that makes us all suspect that the audience is for young people is that Jesse, a high school student, is one of the main parts of the story. This fact, alone, makes the story very appealing to young people. And then, of course, the story is told graphically, in the comic format--also appealing. We get to see what is going on with her, what problems she has, and also, how she faces those problems. Moreover, the high school, as a setting, is important for part of the story. We get to see Jesse in a high schooler's environment, high school. I can't tell you more without giving away some important facts relating to the major thrust of the story, so we must leave well enough, alone.

FINALLY: Satisfaction: To most of us, we judge whether or not the story gives us satisfaction in the reading. In this case, however, the story is told graphically, in comic book form. Even so, we still might ascertain whether or not the reading and visual parts of the story work as a cohesive whole in providing adequate satisfaction to say that the story was "satisfying," was "worth it," or was "good."

So, here's what I can tell you without giving away important aspects of the story:

The formal components of the book worked very well. That is to say, I really loved the artwork, the colorists concepts and execution in setting the tone of the various scenes. Very well done! The cover and story pages were just simply beautiful to see and read.

Whether or not the book is called a comic book or a graphic novel makes "no nevermind to me." All I mean, is that I believe a story will rise or fall regardless of what it is labeled. So, I won't enjoy it more as a graphic novel than I will a comic. The content is more important to me, so I do not knock down a story "simply because it is a comic."
It was very gratifying to see Jesse get her day in the sun. Moreover, that Briggs was able to do that without lessening Mercy Thompson's appearances was hugely satisfying. To those of us that love Mercy, we want to see her, and that Briggs accomplished this without losing the story of the high school girl, Jesse, was really great.
In the reading of the book, I sat down to read and read straight through to the end of the book. I would not, I could not, put the book down (so to speak). The story was very entertaining and had me from the beginning pages.

What I didn't like about the book. Well, I would like to have seen more of Adam's pack and a bit more interaction with them. Also, I would love to have seen a little bit more involvement from one or two people from the community. A teacher, perhaps, or one of the police officers who hasn't been able to rest since the first child disappearances. Perhaps, even a concerned citizen watch member who has been researching and tracking the disappearances for years, but no one would listen to him or her. The story, if anything, is lacking more involvement with the community. I mean, if the high schoolers are so upset by this, where are the parents--do they not care? Where are the marches and the community searches for the more than twenty missing children? Where is the community outrage? We see it everyday on our televisions when one child is murdered or has gone missing. So, this part of the story just didn't seem true to the theme of missing children. IT LACKS THREE DIMENSIONALITY! And, also, while some might object to the minor amount of cursing in the book, I found it was not offensive to me.

and feel my money was well spent on my hardback

Overall, I enjoyed the story, beautiful art- work, and the courage to put the gruesome story out in publica- tion. I am sure young people will enjoy it. I certainly did. Perfect? No, the story is not perfect. But, it did pro- vide an overall satisfac- tion in the reading.

Fey have weird likes in this one.

I love this series and this definitely lives up to the rest of the books. I do recommend though if you haven't read any of her previous books to read up to at least Frost Burned which is the seventh book in the series this one is set between that one and Night Broken. So if you try to read this before the series you will spoil yourself for the other books if you plan to read the series.

Another note if you finally want to see what Zee looks like with out any glamour on read this! I finally got to see what he looks like. I haven't read the other graphic novel so I am not sure if he is in the other one but he is in this one. I was surprised, and why does he have to hide what he really looks like? I bet it is because he doesn't want to be mauled over by all the girls that think he is cute.

We also get to see a lot of Mercy's step daughter Jesse you don't see to much of her in the main series just snip its but this graphic novel kind of revolves around her and the new friend she meets. This graphic novel was action packed and sucked me into the story right away.

The only character I didn't really feel was portrayed correctly or drawn as how I imagine him is Mercy's husband Adam. It just seemed off of what I was picturing. Also aren't coyotes smaller than wolves? It seemed like Mercy's coyote and the wolves seemed the same height. I could be wrong and it was just placement that was making them look the same size but I am not sure.

Sally Mann is one of America’s most renowned photographers. Her work has been exhibited around the world and is held by such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. She has received numerous honors, including a doctorate from the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Washington, D.C., and a Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship.

What a Book

Wonderful autobiography about a courageous, talented, free-spirited, and kind-hearted woman. It was absolutely absorbing to come to understand how her life experience was embodied in the subjects that she focused on. As a southerner, I was lead by Mann to recall once again what it was to grow up white in Louisiana in the fifties, and to understand in a deeper way how out of touch we whites actually were with blacks in general, but more specifically with our loving black maids, who raised us like their own children. Many of us sensed that something was fundamentally wrong with our lives, our churches, and our families, but we also knew that trying to talk about these things with our parents and pastors would not be well received. What cowards must of us were; I have always felt guilty about this, as Mann so bravely described in her own life. A stunning book, one of the best that I have read in years. Sally Mann is a national treasure.

This is a well-produced book of lovely family photographs. Some are unposed, but those that are posed are not elf-conscious, "studio-like" pictures, and the children do not seem to be inhibited, even when nude. My only criticism,if you could call it that, would be that the children all look so serious. A smile here or there would not go amiss.

Very good "Art Photography" book, worth owning

I don't know how many editions of this book are available on Amazon but I bought this one because it's supposed to have even better print/ image quality than earlier books (I think cheaper too). The images are generally well composed, some seem well thought out and others more like quick snapshots ( yet I understand Mrs. Mann uses a large format camera, probably magazine page size negatives- hardly a "snapshot" camera!). I didn't count the nudes (most just of her three children) but they tend to be casual in nature, not "sexy"and probably number fewer than "clothed" portraits. If you have any acceptance of nude photographs these won't upset you.
Hardly any of the portraits are split between pages, in this edition at least.
From what I've seen of her work this may be Sally Mann's best book, worth owning by collectors of art photography.

Historian Richard H. Triebe calls the battle of Fort Fisher, North Carolina, one of the last major engagements of the American Civil War. Major not in the number of casualties produced, but because the battle significantly shortened the length of the war. Mighty Fort Fisher guarded the Cape Fear River which was the only approach to the last major seaport open in the Confederacy.
Daring blockade runners brought their precious cargoes through the Federal blockade into the port of Wilmington. These supplies were then shipped north by rail to General Robert E. Lee's army in Virginia.
Federal General Ulysses S. Grant realized he could bring the war to an early conclusion by closing this vital harbor. To seal off Wilmington from the outside world, he had to capture Fort Fisher first. This was no easy task since Fort Fisher was the largest earthen fortification in the Confederacy and was armed with 44 heavy seacoast artillery pieces. In December 1864, and again in January 1865, the United States Army and Navy launched a campaign to close this seaport and end blockade running forever.
Richard H. Triebe's book not only describes these dramatic battles in detail, but goes beyond other historical accounts by following the Fort Fisher prisoners to Elmira Prisoner of War Camp. Triebe researched each prisoner's record at the National Archives and discovered an astounding 46 percent of these men died from disease within five months. Join the author as he explores the causes that led to such a high death rate and find out who were the men responsible for creating such an unhealthy prison environment. Also included are prisoner's statements, statistics regarding the Fort Fisher prisoners and a complete roster of the soldiers captured that were sent to Elmira Prisoner of War Camp.

Story of an Important Civil War Battle

This book is a very good story of the fall of Ft. Fisher,NC and the subsequent
treatment of the Confederate soldiers captured there and taken to the Elmira Federal Prison in Elmira, NY.

The first part of the book is devoted to a detailed description of the battle.
The middle section gives first hand descriptions of the treatment of the soldiers
at Elmira including reports, letters, diaries, etc. The latter part of the book
contains a comprehensive roster of the prisoners. Also included is a thorough
bibliography.

Ft. Fisher was a very inportant but under reported battle of the Civil War. The
author does a good job of enlightening the reader about the battle and the treatment of the prisoners at the Elmira Prison which had a mortatlity rate of
24%.

If You Had Ancestors Who Served in the Military around Wilmington, NC, this book is a must!

I'll give this book five stars because it fills a hole in history and provides for a comfortable read on a difficult historical topic. In my case, it tells the overall story of the days leading up to my 4th-great grandfather's capture as a POW and death in the Elmira Prison Camp three weeks after his capture. Richard Triebe takes time to tell the story, then shares first-hand accounts offered by Fort Fisher POWs that he uncovered in his research. A nice touch is the listing of all the soldiers captured with the fall of Fort Fisher in Jan. 15, 1865 - many of these men are unknown to their modern-day relatives.

Thanks to Richard Triebe, I can envision how everything went down at both Fort Fisher and Elmira Prison.

Great Book!

I purchased this book "Fort Fisher To Elmira" and found that I had trouble putting it down! I have had an interest in Fort Fisher for several years due to the fact that my gg-grandfather and his two brothers enlisted in the Confederate Army in nearby Bladen County and were stationed at Fort Fisher together. All three were all captured by the Union forces with the fall of Fort Fisher and sent to Elmira as documented in this book. One brother died there and was buried in the prison graveyard; the other brother was returned back to James River, Va where he was exchanged, probably due to his poor health from the prison. My gg-grandfather endured the atrocities of Elmira and I was pleased to see his records and those of his brothers in this book along with the other 515 Confederate soldiers who fought there. Not only does Richard Triebe outline the history of Fort Fisher but he tells it through an insight into the lives of those brave men who fought there, were captured and, like my gg-grandfather and his two brothers, were sent to Elmira Prison to endure the atrocities. I learned many things from this book about what my relatives endured but also about life in the fort, prisoner of war processing, and prisoner of war exchanges. I recommend it to any Civil War buff!

very accurate transcriptions

I've been waiting for a benny green book to come out and I finally purchased this about a year or two ago. It has very accurate transcriptions of some of his pieces and is great to have. Once you work the pieces up you can actually play along to his albums (he plays pretty fast though) - most are written in the original key.

I'd recommend this book to any benny green fan -- of course. Also, for any jazz pianists - it's great to go through his book and really see how green puts the pieces together and try to incorporate your style with the pieces.

And for those classically trained pianist (like me), you will appreciate the structure and genius of his compositions and will be amazed at the sound you will be making.

I'd rate this as advanced or advanced intermediate.

Sobering Conclusions

Engdahl lays bare the partnership between government, the major foundations and the agribusiness industry in their eternal quest for global domination with extensive citations, tying it all together well. The Rockefellers do not shine with this exposure. This book is a sobering analysis of the situation we are facing with respect to destruction of the globe's biodiversity and the indigenous and cultural knowledge of how to feed ourselves, all for the sake of a scheme to lock in profits by a handful of corporations and a government that works on their behalf. If you're already down about what's going on, this book is not for you. If you can handle the reality of the situation, definitely read it. This threat is greater than any threat of nuclear destruction by far. Whatever your feelings on overpopulation, the schemes he lays out, developed by the Rockefeller foundation, are truly disturbing. Especially so are the contraceptive corn and incorporation of hCG into a tetanus vaccine(resulting in sterility) given out in enormous numbers to women of childbearing age in Mexico, Phillipines and Nicaragua. This book will make you want to collect seeds on everything you bring into your kitchen from now on, to say nothing of making you not want to eat anything of which you do not know the provenance.

Most Important Book of this New Century

This is my first Amazon.com book review and it is this book, Seeds of Destruction, that finally moved me to write such a review.

I have purchased literally thousands of dollars worth of books from Amazon.com alone and I find this book, Seeds of Destruction, is THE most important book I have come across.

I haven't read the entire book yet, but from what I have read so far (especially the chapter on Argentina), this is one of THE most important and timely books of the past 100 years and this new century.

There are only a few books that are worth their weight in gold and this book by F. William Engdahl is one of them. This work will be remembered as a "signature service" to humanity (a term used in the intelligence world to denote exceptional work).

What a priceless work of research and documentation (some 17 years of hard research) into the heart of absolute Evil that is masquerading behind this GMO movement--the veritable cancer that is metastasizing upon the Earth body--and that has been behind the so-called eugenics movement since 1913. But this book is much more than GMO. It is about the people behind the GMO and eugenics movement and why they are doing what they are doing.

If you really care about your children, your family, and the survival of the human race and of planet earth, then you must first buy and read this book, and then buy 10 more copies as I did and give them to all your friends and family members.

Tell them that this book might save their lives.

I have said this many times, "Knowledge is only a seed, only illumined action produces fruits!' This book is that vital seed without which we are looking toward to some really dire eventualities.

Leave our food alone!

William Engdahl's new book, like his 'Century of War' book of a few years ago gives the layman like myself an understand of complex subjects that is rare with authors dealing with complex subjects. This is such a readable book. It is a great investigation into one of the most important issues of our times: The attempts by a few powerful groups to control the world's food supply. This book made me angry and worried for the future of our food supply and our future as a free (sort of) people. How dare our government leaders allow this !
Every person who cares about where their food comes from,truth in labeling, nutrition, health and affordable access to food supplies NEEDS to know this information. Is there a more important issue? What is more important than water, air and food ? The political agenda of food control, so well explained in this book, is more than a little chilling.

Seeds of Destruction should be read widely and it's information talked about by everyone. As a mother trying to feed my family healthy, nutritious meals everyday, this information is invaluable. Thank you Mr. Engdahl for this well written book! Maybe I'll read it to my children at night so they'll grow up knowing who the boogie men are!

I have mined Mr Cole's books even for years now. I have learned countless principals that I have used in my daily life.

This book helps you prepare to be a Daniel. To be a man that stands up for right in a culture that accepts wrong. To be a man that defends the innocent in a culture that accepts self preservation as your human right.

This is book is for males who want to discover the man that is inside of the male. While you read this book also read the book of Daniel in the Bible.

This is really and truly an excellent book, full of wise words and godly advice. A friend of mine lent me his copy and it quite literally changed my life !( I am certainly going to buy one for myself !!). I highly (very highly) recommend this book to all men out there, who want to learn how to be men of good character...men of integrity and above all...God-fearing men.
