A wonderfully illustrated look at Alexander the Great

Robin Lane Fox considers Alexander the Great to be the world's first authentic hero. Having retraced Alexander's 10 year, 11,000-mile march in carving out his empire and written a prize-winning biography, "Alexander the Great," the author certainly has the credentials to back up this particular book. "The Search for Alexander" emphasizes the conqueror's personality, motivation, and incredible ambition that consistently overcame severe obstacles of geography, weather, morale, and food supply. Consequently, this book reads more like a detective story, sifting through the historical record to make his best case for what really happened and why. "The Search for Alexander" contains more than 220 photographs, 135 in full cover, including striking pictures of the royal tombs discovered at Vergina, Greece in 1977, which Lane Fox argues is the burial place of Alexander's father, Philip II. If you have even a passing interest in the subject, this is a fascinating book, whether you are content just to look at the pictures or are really interested in the historiography involved in this volume.

Well worth the money!

I thoroughly enjoyed Robin Lane Fox's book "The Search for Alexander". The book was very interesting and informative and the photographs were outstanding. The only thing I was disappointed in was on page 68 is a photo of the head of a statue that might be Hephaestion, and it is placed too close to the edge of the page so that the nose is cut off. I have also read Mr. Fox's books "Alexander the Great" and "The Making of Alexander". I have enjoyed reading and re-reading all three of his books. I find Mr. Fox to be a very likeable man and his books are very fair to Alexander. I highly recommend all of Robin Lane Fox's books.

Decent read... Much better and well written accounts of all things Alexander out there. If you're a fanatic of that time period like myself, its worth the read - if this is your first book on the subject, look elsewhere.

A lot of good information!

Zig Ziglar has out done himself once again in coming out with this great book on Network Marketing. I am a great fan of Zig's sales and motivational tools and this book is no exception. The book covers an in-depth look at compensation plans, handling customers, being a leader, etc. The only true flaw is that this book lacks the insight on informing new recruits of the MLM pitfalls they are bound to encounter. It also skips over the exact "how-to"'s of handling objections and doing presentations. Plus this book is not "simple" enough or easy to "duplicate" for the new recruit. It's just too long!. If you're looking for a book that covers the essentials of "how" to succeed in MLM, may I suggest: "Your First Year in Network Markting" by Mark and Rene Reid Yarnell, instead.
Bottom Line: Don't get me wrong, this is a great book for people who want to know about Network Marketing, and with just a little fine tuning, would be the best book ever!.

Should be: How to be a dummy in network marketing

I have always been a fan of Zig, that is until this book. What ever happened to Zig's own Network Marketing Company? That's right it went under. Not even the marketing power of his name could save it and now he wants to tell you how to build a solid business? Zig is a great sales trainer and motivator but it's evident from this book that he didn't have much hands on experience in this business. At one point he says that you should be proud of being in the "sale profession" and then in another part he says the Network Marketing isn't about sales. Network Marketing is a legitimate business not a get rich quick scheme. Unfortunately too many people sell it as the latter and this time Zig goes along. As a seven figure earner myself I would recommend other sources like Leaders Club, for honest information about what it takes to really make it big in this business. If you want a great Ziglar book get, "5 Steps to Successful Selling."

I have read hundreds of books on networking, hundreds of books on business, hundreds of text books and at least 5 novels. I met Zig when I was 18, he told me something that changed my life (it's in the book). The concept of this book is simple (thus the Dummies title), if you want to grow your group, this is the one. It is loaded with great information. Now the 5 reasons: 1. Don't but it if you want to spend the next 5 years trying to figure out the industry. 2. Don't buy it if you want to spend the next 5 years trying to figure out people. 3. Don't but it if you want to make every mistake and learn your own lessons. 4. Don't buy it read it and do nothing. 5. Don't buy it unless you have a dream of where you want to go. It's my book of the year!!!

With sympathy and focus she cites case histories to illustrate the struggles required of adolescent girls to maintain a sense of themselves among the mixed messages they receive from society, their schools and, often, their families. Pipher offers concrete suggestions for ways by which girls can build and maintain a strong sense of self, e.g., keeping a diary, observing their social context as an anthropologist might, distinguishing between thoughts and feelings. This atmosphere has destroyed the happiness of many teenage girls and has led to a frightening increase in self-destructive behavior. Pipher's descriptions of adolescents' lives--then and now--are particularly well done. Included are thoughtful recommendations for parents and a plea for changing the direction of our culture. The Mom Bible: Reviving Opelia by Mary Pipher

This is the second time I am purchasing this book for myself. The first time I purchased Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary Pipher, it was because my own daughter was going through a very rough time and I wanted to understand her better and find out if there was something that I could do. I received a great deal of insight and guidance from this book, which goes to great lengths to show the difficulties faced by girls in our society. Between unrealistic magazine ads and unreachable goals and the self-esteem issues of young girls, the author has managed to touch on the sensitive and emotional time this can be for adolescent girls. The reason I am purchasing this book a second time is because I loaned my first copy to a mom who needed it more than I did, and she kept it and relied on it and I'm happy for that. Now, I need this as a text book for a college class and it is required reading. Of course, I love the book and will enjoy revisiting the content. FYI: My two girls have grown up to be women that I am proud of every day. I think this book had something to do with that. Thanks for reading my review. Validating and Helpful

At age 46 and having no daughters but 2 teenage sons, I found this book to be very insightful as to the still present haunts of MY adolescent years. It helped me to understand the disconnect that my 1930's born parents had with my 1980's teenage years. Yes, the book could be said to be "dated" (pre-Internet, etc.) but it doesn't take much thought to project the content forward to our current cultural situation of social media, etc. The concepts would be the same, only intensified. While the perfectionist in me finds it hard to give any non-fiction book 5 stars (I agreed with most but not all of the author's theories), my 4 stars still reflect that this book had significant impact on my life and has inspired me to become a mentor to girls who, much like myself, lost some critical parts of personal happiness, joy and self-esteem in adolescence.

If you have daughters, you must read this!!!!

I don't care who you are, if you have a daughter, you need to read this. Then you need to re-read it.
Any female can tell you that she would never go back to adolescence. It was awful! Imagine how much harder it has gotten.
Our daughters are bombarded by messages that tell them that their entire purpose in life is to be a skinny, attractive, sex object.
Mary Pipher will open your eyes to the subliminal messages all around us, the ones that are damaging our daughters. Then she gives us ideas on how to combat these ideas, how to make our daughters realize where these thoughts of worthlessness are coming from, then how to overcome them through real purpose.
This really is I e if my favorite books. In high school, my English teacher suggested I read it. I didn't back then. Once I had my own daughters, I bough it for my kindle and have read it several times.
Whether we want to admit it or not, our society is hard on women. Look at magazine covers. Women can't have wrinkles, grey hair or cellulite. Men on magazines can have all of these things, because we look at their character. Women's magazines tell us we first and foremost must look good to have any value, then they tell us how to work full time, have a gorgeous house, balance career and family, lose the baby weight like celebrities and be flawless in general. Expectations we will never look up to. Men's magazines have articles on improving sex, meeting women, sports are awesome, bosses suck and more about improving sex.
While we can not fix our broken and biased society, we can arm our daughters with the knowledge that this is out there and then teach them that these messages are wrong.

Things look good for now

I travel a lot and stay away from home four days a week and would return back as a tired person. My sexual life was badly disturbed and even my partner started complaining about me. So I had to take help of a friend who suggested this book and it worked perfectly well. We are trying most of the things and hope we will be happy as always. Things look good for now.
