"Action", not acting

I am a firm believer that there is no one "right" way to be an actor. However, I *do* think that actors should expose themselves to many different schools of thought and find what works for them. So whether you are a Meisnerian, a Stanislavski-ite, or a Hagenist, you owe it to yourself to read this. It is what I would call "de-constructionist" acting technique -- breaking things down to their essential elements of action and intent. I was never able to get my mind around some of the more esoteric elements of other acting methods, but this one made sense to me. You may also want to read "True and False" by David Mamet, as it provides some of the philosophical underpinnings for this approach to acting.

Exciting Choices for the Actor

I used this book to teach a beginning acting class at our community college. It is an excellent introduction to the craft. The book gives clear examples of selecting an action that create clear and exciting choices for the actor. Rather than focusing on emotional states such as "you're angry or you're happy," the text shows how to allow emotional truth to come from the moment while focusing on what the character is doing. The examples in the book are practical and relate well to the craft. I particularly appreciated that an action should have a test in the other character. So rather that an character delivering a letter with an action "to deliver" that is over without fanfare, a more exciting action would be "to please my boss so I'll get a promotion." The character still delivers a letter, but with a more dynamic action that is interesting to watch. The book is short. I covered the material in our film acting and stage acting units in about eight classes. It's short, sweet & to the point. I recommend it as a great review for experienced actors and as a wonderful introduction to beginning actors. Enjoy!

About the Author
Tony Pappas is a multi-instrumentalist composer/producer, best known for his work on, "Intergalactic Highway"; the debut album from his Ghosts of Orion project.

Having a voracious appetite for music theory, Tony reached a very high level of musical understanding, and his ability to share that understanding is nothing short of inspiring, he's exceptionally good at it.

When asked why he enjoys teaching so much, he said, "I never thought I'd be teaching music, I just wanted to write and jam. But, as the years went by, I fell in love with it, and I'm really just getting started. I have some great ideas on how to help people learn, and I'm very excited about what's to come!"

As it turns out, Tony's not only great at teaching humans, he's also great at teaching computers.

In addition to being an excellent musician, Mr. Pappas is an expert software engineer. Having keyed-in his first program on the VIC-20 at the age of 10 (over thirty years ago), he has a long history in computing and has developed a considerable degree of skill throughout the years.

Tony has recognized the need to be 'on the cutting-edge', and has remained on the forefront of developing technologies and design strategies, especially in the world of music, and now, having fully integrated the two disciplines, he has taught his computer how to play the drums, piano, guitar, and bass, so it can, as he says, "help humans learn these instruments much faster and more efficiently."

Mr. Pappas is founder and president of Prosonic Studios, a music & software studio, where he composes, teaches, and creates learning & compositional tools for musicians all over the world.

Altered Tunings

This book was a real reach for me. This book is for learning chord patterns when your guitar strings are tuned to FCGDAE, an alternate tuning method used by Stanley Jordan, among others. Each string is tuned to a perfect 4th above the next.

That being said, this book is easy to read and understand. The charts are large, color coded and show root/tonic in red and the chord voices along the frets. The recommend notes are solid, the alternate notes are dotted circles.

The intro is very succinct and to the point, Tony Pappas tells you the what you need to know without being overly wordy. I like that.

Tony Pappas puts the tools in your hands so you can craft your own music. He has made it quick and easy to learn what is normally hard and time consuming. In this day and age when we are all too busy, this aid is just what one needs to learn guitar... and when you're talking about alternate tunings you won't find many competing products, and none on par with this one.

Simply the best Chord book I have seen.

This book presents a great new way of showing the chords of the fretboard. Each diagram shows the chords with different viocings, making it easy to see how the voicings are related. The root is printed in red with an R, the other notes are printed in black and showing the interval to the root, e.g. 5, -7, 9. It covers all the chords I will probably ever need and I'm impressed by how simple Pappas has been able to present all this information.

If you're interested in getting a unique sound and stretching your mind on guitar....This is the book for you. Very interesting and inspiring. If you're looking to create more interesting chord voicings for song writing, this is a great tool! Well thought out!

This field guide provides an up-to-date and integrated approach to the geology and geomorphology of Almer�a Province, compiled by active scientific researchers in the region. The guide assumes a basic knowledge of geology and geomorphology and will be of interest to earth scientists at all levels from the keen amateur through to undergraduate/postgraduate students and academics visiting the region. The guide provides general background on the area, followed by a selection of specialized trips that progressively explore the structure and development of the basins, the shallow marine sedimentation, the continental sedimentation and finally the uplift, dissection and geomorphic evolution of the sedimentary basins. Quick summary: This book deals with the changing brand environment, where consumers are more familiar with marketing and able to see through hollow marketing promises. De Chernatony focuses a great deal of attention on how the staff in an organization can be motivated to commit to the values promoted by the brand and thereby strengthen it. The keyword is coordination, and de Chernatony argues for a balanced approach which looks both outside and inside an organization to satisfy the stakeholder's needs. We liked this book - 4.5 out of 5.

Chapter one looks at the definition of a brand from both an external and internal perspective, and also looks at team based brand management.
Chapter two looks at the complexity of brands, and how different interpretations of a brand can be brought to attention in oder to achieve more consistency. This chapter looks at concepts such as image, identity and vision.
The next chapter looks at ways in which inconsistencies in branding programmes can be tackled. On-line brands are discussed, and the importance of consistency between off-line and on-line sources is stressed.
Chapters four to ten look at the process of building and sustaining brands. Chapter four deals with three elements of powerful brand vision; an envisioned future, the brand purpose and the brand values.
Chapter five looks at organizational culture and how the behaviour of staff can be a competitative advantage if related to the values present in the organization's culture.
The next chapter looks at long and short term objectives, and ways of focusing the staff's attention on these.
Chapter seven looks at the five forces in the brand sphere which can enhance or impede a brand's success; the corporation, distributors, customers, competitors, and the macro environment.
Chapter eight deals with brand essence - ways in which the core nature of a brand can be summarised using models such as the brand pyramid.
Chapter nine looks at brand delivery systems and the last chapter looks at how a brand's progress can be evaluated.
The book has excellent summaries in the beginning and end of each chapter, and there are also an activities section in each chapter, as well as exercises to help the readers put the ideas into practice. Academic readers may be especially interested in the 'further reading' lists at the end of each chapter.
This book is, in spite of its theoretical content, both an interesting and enjoyable read. The text is scattered with examples from real life, which stops the book from being too dry and boring. From Brand Vision to Brand Evaluation will appeal to both academics and practitioners, because of its depth and applicability.
