Kenneth Laws is Professor Emeritus of Physics at Dickinson College. He has been active in the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet and has instructed Dickinson students in ballet throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He is the author of two books about physics and dance and is the leading expert on the subject.

As Much Science As The Dancer Ever Should Need.

The question of how a knowledge of the science behind the movement of the human body helps students of dance learn to dance better is always discussed. Like the author, I too am both a physicist and a ballet dancer. I have found that the most important thing to learn in ballet is the imagery that works for you, and sometimes science can actually get in the way. Take walking for example: if we had to analyze ever movement in walking we would never be able to move. I should also point out that science still does not thoroughly understand walking, let alone dancing! Still, it is helpful in some places to understand, at least a little, what is happening in a movement or static pose. This book does a surprisingly fine job of covering most of the pertinent topics and some topics you would not have thought of asking about. I liked the fact that the author does not over simplify some topics, which is often done in elementary explanations. Science usually tries to abstract and simplify in order to explain phenomena, but this can lead to problems. Take, for example, the case of static balance on a point. If you approximate the human body as a rigid body, it is impossible to explain stable equilibrium on a point. Rigid bodies can only achieve unstable equilibrium over a point. But human beings are not rigid! In ballet, we can achieve stable balance over a point for an indefinite period of time(it is very difficult and rarely seen in performance but often in ballet class). This book actually mentions this and explains how it is done. It even includes a discussion of how much a cushioned floor will reduce shock to the dancer's joints. Many illustrations and photos are also included. This is the best book available on this subject, and for those who want to explore this topic further, this is the best place to start.

Absolutely incredible!

This book is INCREDIBLE!

I have several years of different kinds of dance and dance-related background (social dancing - swing, tango, etc.; yoga, pilates, ballet, ...) I also have a strong background in mathematics, physics, computer science (will have a Ph.D. in a few months) and related disciplines.

If you have some college-level physics background, or even a solid understanding of high-school physics, chances are that you can work out many of the things in this book on your own. But it takes time, and you may not have the enthusiasm. (In fact, after reading this book you may get the enthusiasm to actually work out a few things.) On the other hand, if you have this kind of background, then reading this book is simple, very enjoyable, and also a great learning experience. You do not have to understand everything. If you understand one idea from each chapter - that is more than enough to read this book. (For example, if the only things you understand from the chapter on pirouettes is that it makes sense to push into the floor with both legs in opposite directions. Another idea you may get from another chapter is - why your body wants to lean in the direction you are starting to fall to actually save you from falling.)

This is great for learning dance on top of your scientific background. In minutes you pick up things that would take months to discover. You start applying them immediately. Very quickly (if you devote some time to thinking over this book) it creates a framework in your mind. You come to a dance class, and you understand so much more, because many of the things can be easily explained in the framework of this book. In other words, the book gives you a quick foundation to build on top, if you have intellect and years of education, rather than years of dance background (then you already do have a foundation).

Besides, this book gives you a better understanding of physics. Especially if you are more of a dancer than a thinker, then, I would assume (not sure though) you can get a lot of physics out of it. That is, you can use the book the other way round. You know how something feels, and then you can relate to the physical explanation.

I am not, however, sure that this book would be of equal benefit to those who don't know much physics. Generally speaking, I would highly recommend to every dancer to actually learn some physics. Especially if you are in college, take a course in basic Newtonian mechanics. (This can make even more sense for a dancer, than learning anatomy or music.) The author of the book stresses it a lot, many dancers without a science background do many things that are counterproductive. It takes just a little scientific thinking to recognize these mistakes and stop wasting time. Just like it is useful to know how your body works to e.g. strech safely and efficiently, it is also useful to know how nature works to dance better.

If you ask "What does it feel like, when you know more physics, how does it help to dance?" --- I can try to answer. You know how it feels when you notice which way you are falling (out of balance or out of alignment) - forward, sideways, etc., right? You notice, then you fix it. After this book, especially if you have some physics background to relate to, but perhaps even without it, you will start to notice how having your feet further apart makes it easier to rotate (e.g. pirouette from 4th), how lifting your leg in Arabesque Pirouette slows you down (unless you lift it higher than 90 degrees), how sacrificing turnout before a grand jete makes your jump longer and higher; how you get more tired when doing slower jumps then when doing faster jumps, and other kinds of things. The world will become more clear for you, easier to understand; it will make more sense.

If you do some other dance style, you would also definitely benefit from this book. (You would benefit much more if you supplmenent your dancing by taking some ballet classes, at least for a year, and then you can apply this book to your dance style.) If you do acrobatics, martial arts, etc., you can greatly benefit from this book as well, but again, you need to be able to relate to this book. You need to know some ballet (better by personal experience) and/or some physics, at least on a basic level (e.g. 2nd Newton's law, F=ma).

If you are a physicist, note that this book is not technical. It has some appendices (still pretty basic) and plenty of references, some, presumably, to more technical materials. So you can use it as a starting point. (Not sure there is much technical research on the physics of dance or related activities.)

Overall, a great book. Standing ovation!

Worst.Textbook.Ever. (or as close as I've experienced!)

I must agree with many others who have rated this book poorly! I have found numerous issues with word order within sentences, information either so poorly written or poorly researched (could be either!) or perhaps so poorly edited that consecutive paragraphs or sections seem to present conflicting facts. I have also found numerous spelling errors, such as a section headed "sulphonylureas", then spelled "sulfonylureas" in the next sentence. I understand that there may be difference between UK & US English spellings, but please pick one (preferably the one used by the text's target population) and stick with it.

With such glaring errors it is difficult to have confidence in the information presented within this text, which is a pity as this is such a vital topic. As this (3rd) edition is now approximately 5 years old, I can only hope that this text undergoes substantial rework if a next edition is to be printed.

Solid Content...Editing, Not So Much!

My pharmacology class for the South University family nurse practitioner course uses this textbook. I am finding that it is actually one of the easier textbook to read, however I feel that it probably could have been edited better. I have found quite a few punctuation and grammatical errors in my readings. This is certainly not a huge deal, as the main points of the text are well understood. Again, as far as content goes, this book makes them easy to read and understand!

I don't recommend this book for people who want to learn MIMO. If you need a reference to equations and such, it is fine, but there is no real explanation of any concepts in any level of detail.

Ellen Wohl's A World of Rivers gives a fantastic and in depth introduction to understanding the world's greatest rivers and the effects of human interactions with them. She divides the book into twelve chapters and covers the ten greatest rivers in the world: The Amazon, The Ob, The Nile, The Danube, The Ganges, The Mississippi, The Murray-Darling, The Congo, The Chang Jiang, and The Mackenzie. There is also an introductory and conclusive chapter that both illustrates the importance of these rivers and gives an easy-to-read style that explains the contents of the book very succinctly. She also separates the chapters by inserting a creative interlude taking an artistic form. They all tell the epic journey a water droplet takes to get from the mouth of the Amazon to the Atlantic ocean or from the mouth of the Nile to the Mediterranean Sea, etc. Ellen Wohl's book is a fun and informative read, letting the reader know just how much to know in order to have a basic understanding of the world's great rivers and human impact thereon.
Wohl states her purpose early on in the introductory chapter as to "explore how the changes humans impose can impoverish the rivers, and by extension impoverish all the many creatures that rely on both of them." She goes on to explain that of the ten rivers covered only three remain relatively untouched by humans and the other seven are "undergoing rapid change" (Wohl, p. 2). From the first sentence of each chapter does the information start flowing from the page. There are no pointless introductions or meaningless paragraphs that drag on, but rather she exemplifies the rivers by describing them very concretely. The chapter in which she describes the Amazon is a wonderful sample of how she writes about the rivers and their components. She illustrates that the Amazon watershed stretches from the wester shoreline of the Pacific Ocean all the way to the eastern shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean and is the largest watershed in the world.
In her chapter on the Nile the entire fluvial process is elucidated, starting from the mouths of both Lake Victoria and Lake Tana (the beginning of the White Nile and the beginning of the Blue Nile). Covering every aspect of the hydrologic cycle in both the White and Blue Nile and then continuing once they convene, Wohl shows the reader exactly the comfortable proportion of facts and narration to make these sections easy to read.
The book as a whole is a wonderful initiation into the study of fluvial systems in the world and holds a multitude of information on the world's ten largest rivers. The message is conveyed in an easy to follow style and the fact-based information is happily coupled with integrating interludes that take a more creative look at the chapter covered prior. The book's main point, the human's impact on the rivers, is shown throughout each chapter even if the river still remains for the most part untouched and leads the reader to follow up with her thesis by sparking a sense of curiosity in the reader and a desire to travel to these far off places of beauty which has been subject to so many a poem.
However, as the book is targeted towards the ten biggest rivers in the world it may not speak as passionately to some as the content does not touch upon the smaller fluvial systems that may be closer to home. This is hardly a large diminishing factor in the overall quality of the work, but merely a side note and spoiler that some may be expecting upon reading the book.
This is a fantastic volume on the world's largest fluvial systems that should be in the bookshelves of each who studies or has some sort of interest in the rivers that host such beautiful parts of the natural world.

Not all the world of rivers but a good start

Wohl uses the writerly device of the migrations of a drop of water through these systems. I don't think it works particularly well, although it does make the point that world rivers are part of a vast system of water flows over and under and through the land.

She has useful detail on river dynamics and rivers in a general sense. The strength of the book is the detail on each river, allowing a sort of compare and contrast of the past and the present situation of each. The ten rivers are by no means all of the most important, but exemplify all the others. Each has things unique to its history--the Ob faces pollution from nuclear waste from the former Soviet Union's weapons programs, the Ganges features a reverential kind of pollution from cremations on its banks, the Mississippi has been altered almost beyond recognition by the Army Corps of Engineers. The context and situation of each river would be a book to itself, but Wohl manages to provide significant context and does it readably. The environmental changes she describes include in particular, dams.

I found the chapters on the Amazon and the Congo to be the most interesting, because of my interest in Brazil and the Congo. Other readers may differ. Rivers worldwide are worth finding out about, particularly as water becomes scarce. Future conflicts are likely to emerge over the Nile (between Egypt and Ethiopia), the Tigris and Euphrates (Turkey and Iraq), the Colorado (USA and Mexico) and Chinese interest in Siberian waters. Her book covers only ten of many important rivers, but it is a very good start for anyone interested in rivers. Look at a map and see which major rivers in Southeast Asia originate in China, and you'll see why rivers may be sources of conflict.

A World of Rivers was written by Ellen Wohl, a professor of geosciences at Colorado state university. The book explores ten of the world largest rivers: (Amazon, Congo, Chang Jiang, Mississippi, Ob, Danube, Mackenzie, Ganges, Nile, and Murray-darling). Each chapter focuses on the 10 different rivers. He explores the natural history of the world's largest rivers that are listed above and the history human alteration to these river ecosystem by reading on a journal down each river and along the pathways that connect seemingly far distant rivers. Although he explores the approach of environment historians, he did not explore the social history of the people living in each of the river basin. I think if he explored the social history it would have explained more how the people of those regions harmed the river and in the long run the disadvantages are terrible.
The author emphasizes the interconnectedness of everything in the environment through examination of the history of rivers in order to encourage people to be more respectful of the rivers and the environment in general. The author gave some examples of how the River flow through many channels and when they overtop their banks, the water flows, carrying sediment and nutrient that rejuvenate the wetlands and the forests of the floodplain. There is a saying that a river does not flow through the forests without bringing down or taking along things like trees and soil. The soil and all the things that flow with the rivers, which provide food and nursery habitat for vulnerable young fish and the floodwater pass through different channels, carrying organic matter that helps supply the river's food web. The author identified the flowing of river as "flood pulse" as one of the primary contributors to river health. Learning about the rivers you end up learning about different things that go on in the environment.
The author makes connection between how humans have harmed the rivers and how that will, in turn, harm humans. Regardless of the resource supplied and the vital service from the River, human activities have impoverished most of the world largest river basins. The dam is one of the examples of human impoverished activity, out of the ten largest rivers in the world; five have been affected by the dam (Mississippi, Nile, Danube, Change Jiang and Murray-darling), are strongly affected catchment in which the main channel and tributaries are highly fragmented by dams that affectively break the channel up into shorter segments. Only 120 of the 292 catchments assessed for the study were judged to be unaffected as a result of fragmentation or flow regulation by dams and most of these are smaller rivers.
The author reviews the ten rivers to show how each has its own unique identity and place in the world. In each of the river the author talk about the precipitation, windblown sediments and the atmospheric contaminate enter them from the air. Chapter 2 talk about the precipitation over the headwater of the amazon, following the river downstream across south America and chapter two ended where the Amazon enter the Atlantic, she explain this by tracing the pathway of a hypothetical water droplet leaving the mouth of the Amazon until the droplet falls as precipitation on the headwater of the Ob-Irtysh river system in Siberia. In each succeeding chapters follow the same format as in chapter 2, tracing the path of the same water droplet down another river basin and then follow it to the next one. In each chapter the author trace the pathways between rivers basin and she tried to estimate realistic rates of travel for a droplet moving with Specific Ocean current and the atmospheric circulation patterns.
In conclusion the book was able to explore that the world is part of one round river giving example. Like the things the people in the United States do to the Mississippi river basin does make a different in the basins of the Congo, the Ob-Irtysh and the Murray-darling and vice versa. The author uses the ten great rivers as pathways of learning and exploration of rival all over the world. The book is written to non-specialist readers interested in natural and environmental history and the book provide some reference material for those who wish to delve further into the topics discussed. I will end up saying that we can claim ignorance of the effects of our action and we are all part of one round river.

About the Author
Sue Townsend is one of Britain's favourite comic authors. Kindle version needs to be proof-read!

I've always loved the Adrian Mole books, and have read them several times. I was so excited to find it on the Kindle!

However, its not worth it. Don't buy it.

It hasn't been proof-read!

I can't tell you how many times "God" was written "Cod" and a number "1" was used instead of a capital "I". I was severly disappointed by this.

I've given a 3 star review because I love the book, not the Kindle versin.

hilarious and educational

I first read this book when i was in high school. at the time, i thought it was hysterical, but i piqued my interest in sociology. I later earned my degree with a double major in psychology and sociology, and still later a ph.d. in psychology. as i have grown more experienced in dealing with people, watching our culture continue to change, this book has become more poignant. it is incredibly informative, challenges one's beliefs, and very very intelligent. Its worth reading, for anyone interested in studying american culture in the last 60 years.
