Excellent Guide for Handling Money Values

A good philosophical account about money, although initially when I picked it up from the library shelf I thought it would present tips on saving or making more money.

Full of examples from history -Jane Austin, Cincinnatus etc and it reflected my own ideas about money, as well.

Perhaps an outstanding feature of the book is its balanced and realistic (rather than idealistic) model. The author on one hand acknowledges the importance of money and on the other denounces the possession of a huge amount of wealth, if it is not put to good use. Towards the end, he talks about `inner wealth' where he discusses the example of Cincinnatus which I thought was quite powerful.

He carries a brilliant idea from beginning to the end about the differentiation of `money worries' with `money troubles' and I think I will quote this book in my future life because of this differentiation that I had never thought of before.

The author has been very honest in including a separate chapter in the end about his source of inspiration, chapter by chapter, in

the end.

The language was simple and style marvellous.

The only criticism was that at places the author went too deep into his descriptions, which sometimes became difficult to comprehend. However, this is due to my own failing and poor knowledge----perhaps a problem with any philosophical idea when read by a common man.

Simple to understand, but not simplistic

For most of my life, I've had a difficult relationship with money--either I spend it like there's no tomorrow, or I hoard it as if I'll never see it again. Any purchase I make, good or bad, I struggle with guilt. I've known that these attitudes I have are a psychological issue, but I haven't known where to start in figuring them out. Armstrong provided that for me. With gentle but firm words, he provides a safe place to explore what is a sensitive and emotional issue.

Well worth your time, and yes, money.

There are two types of money problems: "money troubles" and "money worries". The former relates to our immediate circumstance (bills, debt, upcoming payments), whereas the latter is our inner dialogue about our relationship to money: how much do we need, what is enough, will it make me happy, and so on.

This book does not address the money troubles question - for that, find some other books. However, even if money troubles is the immediate problem, you should still read this book, as it builds a great and practical framework for how to think about our "money worries". For example, as the author points out, first we should separate our "needs" and "wants": you may want many things but not really need them, and you may need things that are out of your financial reach. Having a good relationship with money is not about denouncing it, or seeking to making millions, but rather becoming conscious about how it helps us achieve our larger goals - i.e. how to flourish as individuals.

The book is easy to read and packed with practical examples and advice. Well worth your time, and yes, money.

Although fought by light units with no dreadnoughts involved, Otranto was a battle in three dimensions―engaging surface vessels, aircraft, and subsurface weapons (both submarines and mines). An attempt to halt the movement of submarines into the Adriatic using British drifters armed with nets and mines led to a raid by Austrian light cruisers. The Austrians inflicted heavy damage on the drifters, but Allied naval forces based at Brindisi cut off their withdrawal. The daylight hours saw a running battle, with the Austrians at considerable risk. Heavier Austrian units put out from Cattaro in support, and at the climactic moment the Allied light forces had to turn away, permitting the Austrians to escape. In the end, the Austrians had inflicted more damage than they suffered themselves. The Otranto action shows the difficulties of waging coalition warfare in which diplomatic and national jealousies override military efficiency.

Excellent Primer on the Perils of Coalition Naval Warfare

When you think of naval operations in the First World War, usually the Battles of Jutland or Coronel come to mind, or perhaps Gallipoli, but the Adriatic is certainly off most reader's radar screens - which is the appeal of Paul G. Halpern's The Battle of the Otranto Straits. This book covers an Austrian cruiser raid against the Allied anti-submarine barrage flotillas in the Otranto Straits on 15 May 1917, which resulted in a dramatic but forgotten naval action. The book is well written and very well researched, making it a pleasure to read and it almost flows like a novel at points. The action in the Otranto Straits was a small-scale thing, no Jutland, but it nicely illustrates the difficulties of coalition naval operations and naval command and control of dispersed forces, as well as the early influence of aviation and submarines upon surface warfare. This book is a must-read for anyone attending a naval academy.

The author begins by outlining the strategic setting in the Adriatic Sea that led to this naval action. In a nutshell, German and Austrian submarines used Austrian naval bases in the Adriatic to conduct anti-shipping operations in the Mediterranean, which led the Allies to try and erect a complicated anti-submarine barrier of nets and minefields across the narrow Otranto Straits. A large flotilla of converted trawlers, mostly British, was used to service the barrier, while the Italian and French navies provided warships to protect the trawlers. However, the level of inter-Allied coordination was poor, which impaired their ability to respond to Austrian raids. The author also makes a good point that the French and Italian navies had not properly evaluated their likely wartime missions, which resulted in them building too many heavy ships at the expense of light forces. Neither the French nor Italians wanted to risk their heavy ships to save trawlers that operated in submarine-infested areas.

A considerable amount of effort is focused on the Austrian raiding force, consisting of three modern light cruisers, which were faster and better-armed than most of their Allied opponents. Nikolaus Horthy, later leader of Hungary in the Second World War, also made his reputation in this action as a cruiser captain. Essentially, the Austrian raid served no great purpose, other than to "do something" with a fleet that was sitting out most of the war. The Austrians caught the Allies completely by surprise and shot up 18 of 47 trawlers before turning for home. Allied aircraft and several surface groups pursued, resulting in a running naval action across the Adriatic. Although a British cruiser scored some lucky hits that immobilized Horthy's cruiser, the timid Italian admiral in charge opted not to close in for the kill in fear of enemy submarines. The battle ended as a draw, although it had propaganda value for the Austrians.

Again and again, the problems of coalition naval operations are highlighted in this book. The British, French and Italian warships all used different codes and map systems, as well as different time zones, which made effective coordination in battle well-nigh impossible. Some lessons were learned from this action, but many of the same mistakes were repeated in the Second World War.

A small moment of glory and confusion

I knew little about Adriactic operations in WW1.(Still don't know much more!) However, the operation described in this book is a classic lesson. A small, homogeneous force departs on a specific mission. The opposition is much larger but its leadership is disjointed and its task gets more and more complicated. Before it's all over we have an idea of what will follow in the next war... in the Pacific! Surface action galore supported by effective submarine action and somewhat effective intervention, and participation, by aerial forces! How's that for a tempest in a teapot!

The book is fairly short, long on facts and action, and a 'dashed good' quick read. Read it as history, as a good sea story, or for inspiration for a war game. You won't be disappointed. Excellent photographs.

About the Author

Robert A. F Thurman, who was ordained a Buddhist monk in 1964 by Tenzin Gyatso, the current Dalai Lama, is the current director of Tibet House in New York City. He is the father of five children including the actress Uma Thurman. One of the world's most respected scholars and translators of Tibetan and Sanskrit, Thurman has translated The Tibetan Book of the Dead (1994) and is the author or translator of many books including The Central Philosophy of Tibet: A Study and Translation of Jey Tsong Khapa's Essence of True Eloquence (1984), Speech of Gold: Reason and Enlightenment in Tibetan Buddhism (1989), Inside Tibetan Buddhism (1995), and Infinite Life: Seven Virtues for Living Well (2004). This book was published in cooperation with The Institute for Advanced Studies of World Religions.

The Koan of the Void

This is heavy duty Buddhist scripture. Thurman's prolouge and introduction do a great job of setting up the actual scripture reading itself. Considered advanced for adherents of Buddhist thought, for those that aren't (like myself), the introduction is critical - don't skip it. The proposition is that all is unified, and dualism is not real. The artifical dualism and the concept of voidness (the absence of dualism, not nihiilism) permeate the reading. The aparent paradox of an existent void is exactly the "Zen like" koan that is pondered and meditated on to attempt to understand the profundity of reality. A tough read, but a good one. A strong working knowledge of Buddhist thought will be very helpful before diving in.

The Vimalakirti Sutra

We've been studying this Sutra for the past 5 semesters in one of our Zen Buddhism classes at Chung Tai Monastery Sunnyvale. This version--a different translation than the Burton Watson--is not the one we use. It's based on Tibetan sources. However, this translation has PRIMO notes! So I keep it at hand right along with my Watson. Very good for the serious Buddhism student.

Memoir of Culinary Giant

This is exceptional work. Shows the development, passion and humanity that this man possessed.
The added timelines show that his development of the gourmet art coincided with other major breakthroughs.
Great tidbits such as the development of the aprix fixe meal, the ala carte way of organizing the restaurant, the origination of Peaches Melba. His history is fascinating, with its interaction with prominent people and wartimes. What a great happening when German Emperor was told that the chef of your upcoming meal is none other than a former war prisoner from France who wants to poision you. When asked about this by one of Emperor's officers inspecting the kitchen, Escoffier replies" "You may dine in peace. If, one day, your country once again seeks war with France, and I am still able, I will do my duty. But for the time being, you may relax and not let anything trouble your digestion."
One is charmed to hear repeatedly of this man's concern for the less fortunate, the retired chefs with no pension, the senior citizens home he attended to, etc.
Great stuff, here. Nothing boring, but fascinating, e.g. note that Ho Chi Minh was working in Escoffier's kitchen preparing vegetables in 1914. Asked why French are such powerhouses in gourmet world, Escoffier said among the reasons was the the people in each area had their specialties which they kept going, and great food at gatherings is relished and past on from generation to generation.
This covers a most influential man in gourmet history, during crucial world/Eurpoean events as well.

NOT a cookbook........For those interested in the life of the Father of Modern Cooking (into the mid-20th Century, at least)

First off, let me say that this ISN'T a cookbook though it does have several recipes contained in the text.

What it is is the autobiography of world-renowned Chef Auguste Escoffier, the Chef who revolutionized the way modern cooking would become in the early to mid 20th Century. From his meager beginnings in his Uncle's restaurant in Nice to the hotel kitchens he managed in the late 1800s to early 1900s, Escoffier describes in detail what it was like to be the man who he became.

His detailed descriptions of being the Chef to the troops and the battle commanders during the Franco-Prussian War are particularly interesting, considering the lack of things he had to cook with and making do with what he actually did have! After the war, he returned, in earnest, to cooking for the dignitaries of all of Europe and the United Kingdom as well as helping to revolutionize the way "modern cooking" began to take hold in the US. No matter who the dignitary was, he devoted his time to making very specific menus for his guests and even going as far as inventing specific meals for a specific night of entertaining....even if it meant that the guest was coming in over the course of several days in a row with specific menus that varied greatly from one night to the next! And keep in mind that these menus were very elaborate multi-course events with hand-written menus and hours of preparation to be served without any sign of mistakes. Viewing the menus included in the book and the amount of people he served in a given night made me wonder if he EVER SLEPT!!

Escoffier was the picture of determination all across the board of the complete restaurant, no matter whether it was a stand-alone restaurant or one that supported hotels in London, Paris, and the French Riviera. His resolve to support all of his cooks was something that, frankly, the world needs more of in the truly modern kitchen: Escoffier supported his cooks and Chefs not only with good wages but, once they had retired from the business, he setup homes for his older Chefs so they could retire in peace and not worry about where their next meal was coming from. (Where is that admirable quality in "modern kitchens"? Nowhere!)

The book comes with the requisite photos from his life but also includes photos of some of his more famous dinners. At the back of the book are several menus, meticulously offered (and without translation...but if you know even a little French you can wade through well enough). There are a few recipes, mostly of his more famous recipes uniquely designed for the dignitaries he loved to serve.

All in all, it is a tremendous resource for the cook who is interested in the life of one of the greatest Chefs who ever lived.....and, bar none, the greatest Chef to revolutionize the way "modern cooking" was to eventually rise!

[Before I read Escoffier's autobiography, I happened to read N.M. Kelby's "White Truffles in Winter: A Novel", which is a fictionalized account of the roughly last 30 years of Escoffier's life. It more specifically details Escoffier's intimate relationship with Sarah Berhardt, with whom he had and on-again-off-again relationship since both of them led such on-the-go lives. I highly recommend this book to get a deeper sense of the man who Escoffier was. Even being a fictionalized account, there are many facts that are simply skimmed over in the autobiography, which show up in both stories. There are also several recipes....the more notable ones....along with the reason for their names after the dignitaries he cooked for.]

NOT ONLY A BOOK FOR GARDENERS, BUT FOR GARDENER WANNABES

I am a gardener,not an expert, but a gardener non the less. Wow what a book!!!!!!!!. I purchased this book as a companion for information that I already use in growing tomatoes. I am astonished at the amount of usable information, written in layman's terms that anyone can understand.The pictures contained in this book are representative of what you can expect to grow. They are not perfect and unblemished but true examples of a real garden. This book can without a doubt help any grower of tomatoes no matter how long they have been growing tomatoes, However it is also a terrific guide for those who want to grow their own tomatoes but do not have the knowledge to do so.It is written in language that even the non-gardener type can easily understand and follow. It has taken me years of trial and error to learn some of the information contained in this book.This is the starting place for anyone considering growing their own food. Much of the information for growing tomatoes, soil amendments,PH, and fertilizers does definitely apply to many other crops. If you have a garden or are even remotely thinking of growing a garden then this book was written for you.

If you love tomatoes ...

Who better to write a book about tomatoes than Craig LeHoullier, who has grown over a thousand different varieties in his own home garden, who lectures around the country as the expert on heirloom tomatoes, and who is the very person to name 'Cherokee Purple', one of the most popular heirloom tomatoes on the market?
Craig's newest book shares his passion for this amazingly diverse fruit (get the book to understand why a tomato isn't a vegetable) starting with the history of man's relationship with tomatoes, carefully explaining everything a gardener could possibly want to know about growing tomatoes (including the joys and challenges), as well as covering the profound taste and use differences between types with tips about successful seed saving. There are even a few recipes thrown in for your enjoyment.
Epic Tomatoes is a visually gorgeous and extremely useful book that deserves a place in your gardening book collection.

The BEST field guide for the journey to growing your own Epic Tomatoes

While I've only had a short time to peruse the book, I found myself taken back to numerous conversations and journey's I've personally had with Craig over the past 12+ years on the path to growing Epic Tomatoes.

That is what you will get from this book. Craig takes you on a journey, one that is uniquely his own while guiding the reader on their own path. After reading this book, you will know more about growing tomatoes, and tomatoes themselves that you could have expected or hoped for. You will also know more about the author and his journey.
Craig gives detailed instructions and guidelines that have worked well for him. Additionally he presents the facts that everyone's gardens/climates are different and provides the information needed to tune his methods to best work for any environment.

This book differs from other gardening books in that the photos are realistic impressions of what you would expect to find in your own gardens, and there are plenty of them! Rather than being discouraged that you can't reproduce the perfect fruit highlighted in seed catalogs, you will find the realistic representations of what to expect and how to get there most refreshing.
One of my favorite sections (besides the Tomatopalooza[tm] section ) is near the end, where we see the letters that were enclosed with some of our favorite varieties as they were first delivered to Craig. This gives a true accounting of the history behind some of the best varieties around without the fanciful marketing you see elsewhere.

I highly recommend this book as an outstanding addition to any lover and grower of our favorite fruit!
